Koch Membrane Systems Announces Megamagnum Element

World's First 18" Spiral RO and NF Element

Wilmington, MA - Koch Membrane Systems, Inc. (KMS), a world-class developer and manufacturer of innovative membrane filtration and separation products, announces the MegaMagnum spiral reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) element. It has an unprecedented capacity that comes from its unique 18-inch diameter and 61-inch length. MegaMagnum elements significantly reduce the installed cost of large and medium-scale reverse osmosis systems designed for brackish water treatment or municipal water reuse, and for nanofiltration systems where softening or organics removal is a desirable treatment for drinking water supplies.

A single MegaMagnum spiral element contains more than 2,800 square feet of membrane surface area, compared to 400 square feet in commonly deployed 8 x 40 inch products. Floorspace required for MegaMagnum element pressure vessel racks is approximately 50% of that for 8-inch racks, allowing users to substantially reduce building size and civil costs associated with a project. Additionally, the reduction in the number of connections and the size of the membrane rack provides savings in equipment capital costs, while allowing larger trains to be considered.

Until now, element size has been limited by practical issues such as the ability to manufacture very large elements, the availability of ASME-rated pressure vessels, and the need to incorporate easy methods of handling. Overcoming these challenges, KMS is the first company to build 12.75-inch, 15-inch, 16-inch, 17.25-inch and 18-inch diameter elements. Additionally, KMS is the only company to successfully produce 60-inch long spiral wound elements. KMS has also developed a special system for easy loading and unloading of the large elements.

Pilots using MegaMagnum elements have been performed at several locations including the City of Scottsdale in Arizona and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. Each of these pilot studies verified that MegaMagnum elements operate at similar fluxes and pressures and produce the same water quality at the same fouling rate as standard 8-inch elements.
