Film Technology for Switch Applications

Piezo film's capabilities to generate a high voltage output under bending strain, combined with its rugged form factor, make it an ideal candidate for solid state impact switches. Rather than using a switch contact closure, the piezo film generates a pulse which is detected by electronics. Although many of the DTs, LDTs and FLDTs supplied by Measurement Specialties are used for switch applications, it is sometimes convenient to have a switch with integrated electronics. The SW100 is an ideal configuration for impact detection and momentary switch applications. A direct contact force on the tip of the stainless steel cantilever beam of the SW100 induces strain on the laminated Piezo Film Sensor (PFS) element. With dynamic strain, the PFS element generates an output that activates a built-in, normally-open circuit. Once activated, the circuit resembles the closure of a contact switch, but without the inherent discontinuity that contact points exhibit because of corrosion, pitting and bouncing.

Fluid Properties: Solid state tuning fork sensors that simultaneously and directly measure the viscosity, density, dielectric constant and temperature of oils, lubricants, fuels, refrigerants, coolants and other fluids.

Load Cells: Broad range of OEM and T&M load cells and force sensors feature state-of-the-art technologies, which enable customers to measure force with low cost and high reliability. Packaged load cell assemblies for test and measurement applications that require high performance or unique packaging.

Humidity: Designed to improve performance, reduce energy consumption, and increase safety. In any environment where temperature affects performance, compensating for humidity should also be considered. Typical applications for humidity sensors include automotive, appliances, HVAC, and medical.

Photo Optic Sensors: Includes both photo optic components and complete sensor solutions. Component series feature dual LED, bi-wavelength emitters and spectrally paired photo detectors. MEAS optics are ideally suited for medical applications for which the selection of peak wavelength is a priority, such as pulse oximetry (SpO2).

Piezoelectric Film: Enabling transducer technology with unique capabilities. Piezo Film produces voltage in proportion to compressive or tensile mechanical stress or strain, making it an ideal dynamic strain gage. It makes for a highly reliable, low-cost vibration sensor, accelerometer or dynamic switch element.

Position: The combination of materials and manufacturing techniques used for our Linear Variable Differential Transformer sensors (AC LVDTs and DC LVDTs), Rotary Variable Differential Transformer sensors (AC RVDTs and DC RVDTs), inclinometers, clinometers, tilt sensors and liquid level transducers results in extremely rugged transducers which are capable of functioning during and after severe shock loads and vibration. Magnetic encoders offer breakthrough technology for accurate rotary position sensing in harsh weather or difficult industrial conditions. MEAS LVDTs are extremely reliable in tough applications such as gas and steam turbine power generators, sub-sea oil well controls, hydraulic valves/actuators and military/aerospace applications.

Pressure: A range of pressure sensors that can measure from inches of water up to pressure transducers that can measure greater than 30,000 PSI.

Temperature: Leading provider of high precision NTC thermistors, temperature probe assemblies and thermopiles. We have a range of products suitable for a wide array of temperature measurement, temperature control, and temperature compensation applications.

Torque: These sensors utilize leading strain gauge technology to satisfy the most demanding requirements for static and dynamic torque sensor applications. MEAS offers solutions for reaction torque measurement as well as rotating torque measurement. Our torque meters with integral mechanical stops increase the overload capacity and ensure additional protection during mounting and operation.

Traffic: Two unique sensor types are offered for traffic applications: RoadTrax® Brass Linguini® (BL) axle sensors. Made with our unique PVDF (piezoelectric) cable, it is ideal for dynamic applications such as weigh-in-motion, speed and red light cameras, and vehicle classification and counts. BL Axle Sensors are highly accurate for speed and classification, robust, low cost, easy to install, and offer a great signal-to-noise ratio.

Vibration: Uniaxial and triaxial accelerometers are used every day in high accuracy applications to measure vibration, shock, velocity, displacement, tilt and inclination. Utilizing DC-response silicon MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) and piezoelectric film/ceramic technologies, we are developing quality products for on-time delivery with the optimum price for performance value to our customers.

Measurement Specialties (MEAS) designs and manufactures sensors that measure pressure/force, position, vibration, temperature, humidity, torque, fluid properties and perimeter/penetration. Used as embedded devices by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or as stand-alone sensors for Test & Measurement, our products are critical for monitoring, feedback and control. We are the heart of numerous aerospace/military products that provide this vital link to the physical world. Our business is based on understanding your sensing needs and developing solutions that meet your performance, quality and cost objectives. At MEAS, we are Sensing Your World.
