Film Inspection System Detects Hard to Find Scratches

June 1, 2004 Wintriss Engineering recently installed their Web Ranger surface inspection system at a major window film manufacturer to detect and classify very faint scratches in the film. Although very difficult to find during production, these scratches become obvious when the installed window film is viewed during daylight conditions and are therefore very undesirable. Traditional inspection solutions have difficulty detecting these scratches which can be less than one mil in width. To find them, Wintriss developed an innovative lighting solution based on a schlieren optical technique. The installed system has proven to be extremely effective at detecting these scratches as well as spot defects which may be introduced during the coating/laminating process.
