IBM TotalStorage SAN File System V2.2 - Extends Policy-Based Management and Host Support

Overview

The IBM TotalStorage® SAN File System, part of the IBM TotalStorage Open Software Family, is a network-based heterogeneous file system designed to support data sharing and policy-based storage management in an open environment.

The SAN File System:

· Is designed to support high performance data sharing for heterogeneous servers accessing SAN-attached storage.

· Is designed to help lower the cost of storage management and enhance productivity by providing centralized, policy-based storage and data management.

· Has the potential to reduce the overall amount of storage required by allowing storage resources to be shared more efficiently across servers and by reducing the need for duplicate copies of files.

· Has the potential to improve application availability by reducing application downtime for storage and data management tasks.

In addition to the benefits listed above, potential benefits of SAN File System V2.2 include:

· Reduction in storage costs by supporting policy-based movement of files between storage pools and policy-based deletion of files. Over the lifecycle of the data, the type of storage used can match the business needs of the data.

New in SAN File System V2.2.0:

· Support for policy-based movement of files between storage pools.

· Support for policy-based deletion of files.

· Support for file sharing with cross platform user authentication and security permissions between Windows(TM) and UNIX® environments.

· Support for the SAN File System clients on SUSE LINUX(TM) servers.

· Support for iSCSI attached clients and storage.

· Additional globalization support, including Unicode fileset attach point names and Unicode file name patterns, in policy rules.

New in SAN File System V2.2.1:

· Support for the SAN File System client on Microsoft(TM) Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows 2003 servers running in a clustered environment.

At a glance

The SAN File System is designed to help:

· Improve security across heterogeneous platforms with cross-platform authorization at user and group levels

· Improve productivity and reduce the pain for IT storage and server management staff by centralizing and simplifying management through policy-based storage management automation

· Reduce storage needs by reducing the amount of duplicate data and through the sharing of available and temporary space across servers

· Improve application availability and lower failover costs by reducing or eliminating application downtime for storage and data management tasks

· Simplify and lower the cost of data backups through application server free backup and leveraging built in file-based FlashCopy® functions

· Allow enhanced data sharing and collaboration through a single global name space across heterogeneous server platforms
