Fight against product piracy: 3S Simons Security Systems GmbH at FachPack 2013

Nottuln, Germany, -- Legally binding counterfeit protection for the entire packaging process chain - this is the theme for 3S Simons Security Systems' product exhibition at FachPack 2013. The OFT security label is one of the innovations presented by the German specialist for counterfeit protection solutions. It allows users to protect their security-relevant devices and high-quality packaging against manipulation and plagiarism. 3S has developed the industry solution SECUPACK®, which is specifically designed to meet the specific needs of the packaging industry. With SECUPACK® all types of primary and secondary packaging can easily be secured. In the logistics sector, the focus lies on traceability and counterfeit protection with SECUDATA®. The full-service provider 3S Simons Security Systems will be presenting its product protection systems at FachPack in Nuremberg, at the association stand of the Institute for Distribution and Trade Logistics (IDH), hall 4/4-125, 24 - 26 September 2013.

Counterfeit protection for the packaging industry

The fight against rampant product piracy plays a crucial role in the packaging industry, in particular when it comes to packaging in the field of medical technology and pharmacy. For primary and secondary packaging there are many ways of protecting original products against counterfeiting across the entire production and logistics chain, while also ensuring legal certainty.

On the basis of SECUTAG®, 3S has developed several industry-specific solutions for the protection of all products that affect people's health or lives, helping users to unambiguously identify originals. The only device needed is a simple microscope with magnifying powers of 100x magnification. SECUTAG® serves as a deterrent to counterfeiters, reduces the costs of control in production and logistics and strengthens the corporate image of manufacturers as they can communicate their security strategy to the public. Moreover, the system supports the prevention of unjustified product liability claims and claims for compensation.

OTF security label provides protection against tampering and counterfeiting

3S has developed the OTF security label specifically designed to protect security-relevant devices and premium packaging used for quality products. This also ensures that online terminals used for cashless payment transactions, for example, are protected against tampering. The advantage of the new closure seal: It is based on Secure-ID® technology and can be completely removed without leaving any residue behind. In contrast to Void films, adhesive residues which might contaminate the protected device are thus avoided. This is particularly advantageous when using leased devices. Only a gentle push or a slight increase in temperature will cause the OTF security label to show number strings, logos or different visual elements so that any attempt to tamper with a device or packaging is instantly identified. Based on the counterfeit protection system SECUDATA®, micro colour code particles were also added to the label enabling identification of originals. This anti-forgery measure can be combined with traceability systems, such as data matrix or RFID.

SECUDATA®: Traceability must be tamper-resistant

Another major exhibition focus will be on the combination of traceability and counterfeit protection. Radio frequency identification (RFID) or data matrix are identification technologies that are suitable for logistics, however, they do not offer any counterfeit protection. RFID chips are not yet economically viable for mass application and they cannot be used for all materials; apart from that, they can be manipulated. And data matrix codes can now be forged easily.

This is why SECUDATA® combines the logistic advantages of traceability systems (e.g. data matrix and RFID) and counterfeit protection by means of micro colour codes. Both codes are conjointly applicable onto the product, its primary or secondary packaging, labels and closures. Thanks to the micro colour code both the traceability code and the product are protected against counterfeiting in a manner that cannot be legally contested. First, the traceability code is checked via databases; verification by means of the micro colour code then provides conclusive assurance. In this way, SECUDATA® ensures seamless protection of the entire flow of goods and materials, from the supplier and manufacturer to the distributor and end customer.

SECUPACK®: Counterfeit-proof packaging from all domains

With SECUPACK®, 3S has developed an industry solution specifically designed for the packaging industry offering legally binding counterfeit protection for primary and secondary packaging from all industries. Folded boxes, blisters, tubes and cans made of different materials are secured with SECUPACK® allowing them to be unambiguously identified as originals. The colour codes are applied onto the materials by different printing methods, directly added to the products or applied by means of a dispenser.

Complex changes to the manufacturing process are not required when applying the codes by means of a dispenser. This application can be integrated into existing production and supply chains in a simple way and at low cost (e.g. blister packaging lines). As a standard microscope is used for the authentication process, it is not necessary to provide a laboratory for analysis. High investment in expert staff and technical equipment as well as time-consuming verification processes are thus avoided.
