LeftHand Networks Launches SAN/iQ Field Integration for HP ProLiant DL380 Servers

Field Integration Repurposes Existing Hardware Investments to Create Open iSCSI SANs

BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 16 -- LeftHand Networks® has introduces a SAN/iQ field integration offering for HP ProLiant DL380 servers that loads SAN/iQ storage management software on existing server hardware to create storage modules within an open iSCSI SAN.

True to the open iSCSI SAN mission, field integration delivers SAN/iQ software as a product that can be installed on new or existing HP ProLiant DL380 servers. Customers can purchase SAN/iQ software through established sales channels. The software is then integrated in the field by LeftHand Networks' authorized deployment partners. Open iSCSI SANs utilize industry-standard hardware platforms, such as the ProLiant DL380, to create best-of-breed storage networks.

"Migration to blade servers and other high-performance hardware to optimize IT environments is gaining momentum across the board, allowing servers to be repurposed for other roles," said Greg Schulz, founder of market analyst firm StorageIO. "Many users own ProLiant DL380 servers, and repurposing them with SAN/iQ field integration enables organizations to maximize their IT investment by transforming what would normally be a retired server into a powerful and scalable SAN storage solution. It's a tremendous benefit to IT managers from an investment protection, storage management enablement and total cost savings perspective."

With SAN/iQ field integration, customers have the ability to turn past ProLiant DL380 purchases into a new iSCSI SAN, or add storage modules within an existing SAN/iQ cluster. This boosts constrained IT budgets by minimizing additional hardware costs associated with creating and growing open iSCSI SANs.

"Server upgrades and enhancements are a fact of life within the IT department, but budget couldn't support new server purchases and keeping pace with our rapidly increasing storage requirements," said Mark Kash, IT specialist for the Huntington District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. "SAN/iQ field integration was a one-two combination that allowed us to move forward with our storage networking plans while utilizing existing ProLiant DL380 hardware. It delivers cost-effective storage capacity and protects our initial hardware investments, which is a beautiful thing."

"Combining the tried and true storage virtualization of LeftHand Networks with the recent popularity of server virtualization is a powerful combination," said Scott Pelletier, vice president of sales and engineering for Lewan & Associates. "This trend, combined with the impact these technologies have on server consolidation, is freeing up aging ProLiant DL380 servers that can be leveraged to meet storage needs through SAN/iQ field integration. LeftHand Networks has raised the bar to answer customer needs. LeftHand Networks is the only vendor that can repurpose existing servers into reliable clustered SANs."

Field integration also expands purchasing options for customers. It allows them to work with sales partners with which they've already established relationships to purchase new ProLiant DL380 servers. SAN/iQ can then be purchased and integrated in the field. This model eliminates supplier contract and agreement issues often encountered by government customers.

SAN/iQ software is currently available as a field integration offering through any authorized LeftHand Networks advantage partner. The suggested retail price of SAN/iQ field integration starts at $11,975.
