Certainteed Introduces Acoustically and Thermally Superior Toughgard®2 Textile Duct Liner

Easier to Handle, Produces Less Dust

VALLEY FORGE, PA, AUGUST 24, 2004 - CertainTeed Corporation introduces ToughGard®2 Textile Duct Liner, a new generation of fiberglass duct liner that provides improved levels of acoustical and thermal performance and easier handling that are unsurpassed by competitive products.

Designed to be used in most types of comfort heating and cooling duct systems, ToughGard2's thermal performance exceeds that of original ToughGard - the industry's preferred textile fiber glass duct liner - as well as all other competitive textile duct liner products and approaches the levels of performance of rotary liner. Advances in product design and manufacturing technology have contributed to enhanced R-values that are now available in the duct liner.

In addition, production advancements have created a textile duct liner with improved acoustical values that exceed those of original ToughGard. Since duct liner is primarily used to absorb unwanted crosstalk and equipment and air rush noise, these improvements enhance acoustics over a broad spectrum of sound.
ToughGard2's unique composition of glass fibers yields a cleaner cut in the HVAC contractor's shop, whether on a coil line machine or under a contractor's knife. The duct liner also has been proven to produce less dust during fabrication, helping to prevent skin and eye irritation. Other contractor-friendly features include a better tensile strength, excellent recovery after compression, and easier adhesion to metal.

Manufactured at the first U.S. plant constructed especially for the production of textile duct liner, ToughGard2 provides a product that is consistent across the board in thickness, width, and density, as well as in its rich dark brown color. It is designed for systems operating at velocities up to 6,000 fpm and temperatures to 250°F.

Although ToughGard2 exhibits a number of significant improvements over original ToughGard, it retains the most desired characteristics of the ToughGard family of mechanical insulation products. The liner is composed primarily of long, textile-type glass fibers firmly bonded together with a thermosetting resin and overlaid with the extremely tough and durable ToughGard fire-resistant, black air stream surface. The air stream surface contains an EPA registered antimicrobial agent in order to reduce the potential of microbial growth that may affect the product. The antimicrobial properties are intended to only protect this product.

Like all ToughGard products, ToughGard2 features the Enhanced Surface which repels moisture that may enter a duct system and is more moisture resistant than standard liners, while providing optimum acoustical performance.

High-performance ToughGard products provide exceptional resistance to tearing, puncturing, and surface wear during installation and cleaning with industry-recognized duct cleaning equipment outlined in the NAIMA Duct Cleaning Guide.

The air stream surface serves as a barrier against infiltration of dust and dirt into the insulation, improves system efficiency, exhibits low air resistance, and reduces the potential for fiber erosion.

Additionally, the duct liner has a factory-applied edge coating known as Certa*Edge Coat that seals the edge fibers and assures coverage of the transverse edges with coating per SMACNA Installation Standards. This translates into labor and material savings for contractors who previously had to "butter" edges in the shop.

Like original ToughGard, this product improves thermal efficiency by reducing heat loss or gain and decreasing HVAC system operation costs, energy consumption, and resulting emissions into the atmosphere. Condensation is also controlled, potentially resulting in improved IAQ by reducing unwanted moisture. The insulation will not deteriorate or provide sustenance for vermin or rodents, and will not corrode the sheet metal it insulates.
