Avanex Releases a Xenpak Compatible Hot-Pluggable EDFA

FREMONT, Calif., Feb. 28 / -- Avanex Corporation (NASDAQ:AVNX) a pioneer of intelligent photonic solutions that enable next-generation optical networks, today announced the release of a hot-pluggable EDFA, which is fully compatible with the industry-standard Xenpak chassis. The product was developed at Avanex's Shanghai product development center.

The PureGain(TM) 200 Hot-Pluggable EDFA is an essential tool to enable simple field upgrades or healing stressed links. Compatible with the standard Xenpak chassis normally associated with transmitters and receivers, the PureGain(TM) 200 Hot-Pluggable EDFA significantly reduces the cost, development time, management and complexity of adding amplification to terminal equipment. It will be displayed at OFC/NFOEC 2006, Booth 2640 on March 7 - 9, in Anaheim, California.

Customers looking for a low-cost, compact, high-density, modular solution can easily add amplification to a network terminal with this hot-pluggable EDFA. The factors enabling low-cost are:
-- The elimination of all cards, controllers, and circuit packs dedicated to custom EDFAs
-- Flexible shelf reconfiguration and ad-hoc upgrades
-- Higher density of amplified ports
-- Lower power consumption than competitive EDFA solutions
-- Existing MSA standard mechanical and electrical interfaces
-- No system down-time to install additional amplification

Additional benefits include:
-- Fully integrated EDFA includes alarms monitors and command interface
-- Up to eight EDFAs can be integrated in a standard, high port-density chassis
-- EDFA's, Transmitters and Receivers can be interchanged in the same Xenpak bay, enabling flexible designs and lowered inventory cost
-- Standard command line interface compatible with Avanex PureGain product line
-- Integrated controls with alarm set-point management
-- Thermal and EMI performance compatible with Xenpak MSA requirements
-- Compatible with Telcordia qualification requirements
