Textron Fastening Systems New Rivscrew(TM) PL for Plastics Combines Benefits of Rivets and Screws

Textron Fastening Systems has extended its line of fastening systems for plastics in North America with Avdel(TM) brand Rivscrew(TM)PL, a proprietary Speed Fastening process for assembly of hard and soft plastics.

Using an Avdel(TM) 753 hand tool, these coarse-threaded blind fasteners can be applied at the rate of 60 per minute. A hex key can remove and reinsert them up to five times with no reduction in performance.

The new system will be exhibited at the SAE Congress in Detroit (booth 2938) and the Design Engineering Show in Chicago (booth 6357), both held March 3-6.

"Rivscrew(TM)PL is designed for high-tolerance applications in consumer electronics and automotive assembly, including interior and exterior plastic components," said Jonathan Watkins, Textron Fastening Systems director of global product management for blind fasteners. "Other applications include furniture, appliance, lighting, and computer chassis."

Rivscrew(TM)PL combines the speed of rivet placement with the removability of a screw, Watkins noted. "Along with our other lines of threaded fasteners, they provide a full range of solutions for modern plastic materials."

Other Textron Fastening Systems fasteners for plastics include Avdel(TM) Perma-Nut for thermoset plastics and such Camcar(TM) thread forming fasteners as Delta PT(TM) and Plastite(TM).

Rivscrew(TM)PL fasteners are six times faster than self-tapping screws and nut, screw and washer assemblies, Watkins said. They are installed from one side of the workpiece with a hexagon mandrel that expands radially during placement, forming a thread in the host material.

There is no torque control requirement, precluding thread stripping and debris generation during installation, while ensuring a vibration-resistant assembly. The process also delivers high clamp-up and excellent thermal conductivity between components.

Made from low carbon steel with zinc plating, Rivscrew(TM)PL for plastics is available in two 4.8 mm diameter versions with grip ranges of 2.8 - 6.6mm and 2.8-11.5mm. Plans call for adding other sizes.
