Fairchild Semiconductor to Deliver Solutions for Optimizing System Power in Automotive Applications at Convergence 2006

South Portland, Maine--September 19, 2006--Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS), the leading global supplier of products that optimize system power, will demonstrate its leadership position in ignition system products and other solutions for automotive applications at Convergence 2006, being held in Detroit, Michigan, October 16-18. Fairchild's conference exhibit will emphasize its continued expansion of functional power products, including gate drivers, high-side switches and smart ignition IGBTs.

Automotive power electronics is projected to grow at a rate of 8.6 percent through 2009, with even higher growth rates for body electronics and emerging systems, such as power steering and power control for hybrid electric vehicles, according to IMS Research1. Automotive systems are using more analog and power management functions and Fairchild is continuing to develop products in response to this trend. Recent developments in the automotive market include:

Significant demand for passenger comfort and convenience features. With options like heated seats, these systems require significantly more power and power management. Fairchild's integrated high-side switches offer the ability to efficiently switch and control these power loads;

Advanced braking and handling systems for increased safety and comfort. These systems must continuously provide status checks while requiring power and power management at the point of use and power and analog control functions necessary for proper operation. Fairchild's new 40V and 60V PowerTrench® MOSFETs and high-side switches meet these requirements;

New "under-the-hood" systems, such as power steering, are increasingly being converted from mechanical to electronic. These systems require higher current density and lower power dissipation in applications as they evolve. Fairchild is developing 30/40V MOSFET and Smart Power Module (SPM(TM)) technologies to provide efficient and high-power-density solutions necessary for these applications; and

Alternative powertrain technologies such as electric and hybrid electric propulsion systems that require significant increases in on-board electric power processing. These applications require new automotive products such as DC/DC converters that may handle 1 to 40kW, while integrated starter generator (ISG) and traction motor inverters may be required to process from 5 to 120kW or more, depending on the vehicle architecture. Fairchild's automotive-qualified power products, such as PowerTrench MOSFETs, SMPS-rated IGBTs and gate-driver and motor control products, as well as advanced field-stop IGBTs now in development in discrete form or advanced modules, provide cost-effective solutions for these advanced systems.

"Providing our customers with multi-die solutions for their higher power applications is critical," says Paul Leonard, vice president of Automotive Products. "Fairchild is able to leverage its leading-edge discrete technology to deliver both standard and application-specific, high-power functional devices to our customers."

Exhibiting in Convergence Booth 247, Fairchild will showcase its current automotive power applications while providing a look into the future of advanced systems for power solutions.
