Original Press Release:

IBM 7204 External Disk Drive Model 646 Offers High Capacity with 146 GB HDD

Overview

The IBM 7204 External Disk Drive Model 646 is designed to be a low-cost alternative to other externally attached disk storage devices available for the IBM eServer® pSeries® and RS/6000® families of workstations and servers. The IBM 7204 Model 646 uses a redesigned and improved disk assembly, designed for excellent reliability and performance. It also uses an LVD interface.

The new Model 646 External Disk Drives have a formatted physical capacity of 146 GB. This increased data capacity, compared to Models 518, 536, and 573, allows you to add new applications and expand the number and size of data files readily accessible to you.

The increased capacity, the average (depending on operating conditions) seek time of 4.7 milliseconds read and 5.3 milliseconds write, combined with a maximum media data transfer rate of 100.0 MB per second, make the 7204 External Disk Drive Model 646 a competitive storage solution for pSeries and RS/6000 users.

Key prerequisites
