Exelis Selects Cambridge Pixel for Norwegian Coastguard Radar/Video C2 Upgrade

• Cambridge Pixel’s SPx radar, video distribution and display software enables Exelis to reduce specialised hardware content in new upgrade for Norwegian coastguard

• SPx solution uses standard PC processing hardware on client displays to simplify system architecture by using multi-core processors and GPU processing to accelerate the real-time data display

CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom — Cambridge Pixel (www.cambridgepixel.com), a developer of sensor processing and display solutions, has won a contract with Exelis (www.exelisinc.com), a top-tier global aerospace, defense, information and services company, to supply its SPx radar and video distribution and display software to upgrade ships of the Norwegian coastguard.

Exelis in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA wanted to replace a legacy radar and video display sub system with a modern, scalable and efficient software-based solution, and, at the same time, offer enhanced capabilities and improved reliability.

The system selected for the Norwegian coastguard needed to interface to three radar signals and deliver the real-time data to a couple of triple-screen multi-function consoles, where it would be displayed with scan converted radar, overlay maps and tracks on board a coastguard ship.

In addition, data from three video cameras would be distributed on the same Ethernet network to the consoles, where it would be presented on a multi-head display with the radar. A screen recording capability was also required to capture the contents of the two displays for incident analysis.

Steve Hill, senior program manager, Exelis Radar, Reconnaissance and Acoustic Systems, commented: “Cambridge Pixel’s software-based solution met all our requirements and has enabled us to reduce the specialised hardware content in the new command control (C2) upgrade, thereby delivering improved reliability and ease-of-maintenance for our customer.”

David Johnson, managing director, Cambridge Pixel, said: “This upgrade program has taken standard servers and library software from our SPx product range and allowed Exelis to replace their legacy radar and video display sub-system with a modern, scalable and efficient solution.

“Our SPx solution uses standard PC processing hardware on the client displays to simplify the system architecture by using multi-core processors and GPU processing to accelerate the real-time data display,” added David Johnson. “A key feature of our SPx software is the intelligent division of tasks to the CPU and the GPU which is then able to carefully manage the flow of data to ensure that the real-time radar and video is displayed in real-time.”

Cambridge Pixel’s world-leading SPx suite of software libraries and applications provide highly flexible, ready-to-run software products or ‘modules-of-expertise’ for radar scan conversion, visualisation, radar video distribution, plot extraction, clutter processing, target tracking and track fusion.

Cambridge Pixel’s engineering team has decades of experience of developing complex radar processing and display systems for naval, air traffic control, vessel traffic, Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), security and airborne radar applications.

Cambridge Pixel’s technology has been implemented in mission critical applications with companies such as BAE Systems, Barco Defense, Blighter Surveillance Systems, DRS, Exelis, Kelvin Hughes, Lockheed Martin, Navtech Radar, Raytheon, Samsung Thales, Tellumat and Toshiba.
