Evans Company Constructs Machinery to Manufacture Custom Heat Sinks

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI, August 7, 2008 - The Evans Company, known for small and miniature deep drawn stampings in common and refractory metals, has responded to a customer request and has built machinery on which it is manufacturing formed heat sinks.

The heat sinks, for aerospace use, are different from most heat sinks in that they are not extruded but are formed out of sheet metal. This results in thinner sections and lighter weight in a specified metal. They are thin enough to conform to curved or irregular surfaces.

Because the heat sinks are machine-formed, Evans can produce thinner cross sections. The company is using 6061 aluminum that is only 0.005" thick. Evans has also developed a process to heat treat to the T6 condition while maintaining the formed dimensions. In the T6 condition, aluminum exhibits higher yield strength and thus better structural performance.

The Evans Company is the world's leading manufacturer of precision tantalum parts. It also supplies products in niobium, molybdenum, titanium, beryllium copper, nickel alloys, Kovar®, clad metals, common metals and stainless steel. Pete Evans, President of the 80-year-old firm, says the company not only goes out of its way to manufacture custom parts, but it supports materials selection and design.

"We are eager to build custom machinery for special applications," he said. "The Evans Company started in 1928 with the design of automated drawing equipment for jewelry findings. We are proud to continue that innovative tradition."

The Evans Company usually manufactures deep drawn and progressive stampings are up to 3.5" long, with O.D.'s to 6" and wall thicknesses 0.003" to 0.125".

In response to a customer request last year Evans added two hydraulic presses and a 75-ton mechanical press to its extensive assortment of smaller straight-sided, progressive and transfer presses. Combined with a new CNC turning center, Evans now finish machines drawn shells to 5" long with a 7" OD and 0.080" wall thickness.

"Growing with the customers," Evans said, "is part of the tradition."
