National Semiconductor Delivers Multiple Innovations in Ethernet Transceivers

PHYTER Family of 10/100 Ethernet Transceivers Enables a New Class of Connected Devices by Delivering Real-time Performance, Extreme Temperature Range Operation and Other Unique Features

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 20 / -- National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM), a leading supplier of high-speed interface devices, today introduced the PHYTER(R) family of application- specific 10/100 physical layer Ethernet transceivers. National's new PHYTER family of commercial, industrial and extreme-environment Ethernet transceivers are the first to address the expansive, unique needs of embedded design engineers who are developing products that require network connectivity.

"The PHYTER family is a feature-rich set of products that bring with it the performance, quality and long-standing support of National Semiconductor," said Mike McCourt, vice president and general manager of Freescale Semiconductor's Microcontroller Division. "The outstanding reliability and interoperability of the PHYTER family enable Freescale to provide a robust, high-performance networking solution on our 68K/ColdFire(TM) and PowerQUICC(TM) evaluation boards and reference designs."

"The wave of new applications for Ethernet is immense, as our customers increasingly look to connect people and machines in new and unique environments," said Jeff Waters, product line director for the Interface division at National Semiconductor. "National's PHYTER family enables this wave, bringing innovative, application-targeted capabilities to the Ethernet physical layer and allowing system developers to connect devices they never thought possible."

The PHYTER commercial (DP83848C) transceiver addresses the quality, reliability and cost requirements of embedded developers networking their devices for the home. In addition to key features such as IEEE 802.3u specification compliance, UNH interoperability certification, Auto-MDIX and up to 137 meters of cable reach, National's DP83848C incorporates a number of system cost-reducing features not found on other suppliers' physical layer products (PHYs). For example, the DP83848C incorporates a 25 MHz clock-out that eliminates the need, and hence space and cost, of an additional media access control (MAC) clock source component. Between board space and component savings, National's PHYTER commercial transceiver eliminates up to 75 cents in system cost per port. The PHYTER industrial (DP83848I) transceiver addresses the quality and system reliability needs of developers implementing real-time Ethernet in factories and other harsh environments. By removing non-deterministic signaling from the data path, the DP83848I ensures timing latency across the media independent interface (MII) and reduced media independent interface (RMII) MAC standard interfaces. In addition to an industrial temperature range, the industry's highest electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection of 4000V, and up to 150 meters of cable reach, the DP83848I has IEEE 802.3 specification compliance guaranteed by test on every unit shipped. For more information on the DP83848I or to order samples, visit www.national.com/pf/DP/DP83848I.html .

The PHYTER extreme (DP83848YB) transceiver enables Ethernet connectivity up to 150 meters of cable reach in extreme temperature environments. National guarantees through test that every unit shipped is IEEE 802.3u specification- compliant from -40 degrees C to 125 degrees C. The DP83848YB enables networking components in harsh factory and system environments, such as engine blocks or motor controls. Developers of mission-critical products are also using it in unpredictable environments, where having an extra 40 degrees of temperature margin over standard industrial temperatures is essential. Technical Features of the DP83848 PHYTER Family of Ethernet Transceivers

The DP83848 PHYTER family boasts error-free operation over 137 meters of cable, reliably exceeding the IEEE 802.3u specification of 100 meters. The family interfaces to twisted pair media via an external transformer. In addition, the DP83848I industrial and DP83848YB extreme transceivers fully support the joint test action group (JTAG) IEEE 1149.1 test standard for ease- of-manufacturing. This family interfaces directly to MAC devices through the IEEE 802.3u-compliant MII or RMII interfaces. The family also features Auto- MDIX, allowing straight or cross-over cables to be used transparently by the end user.

National also provides the PHYTER Ethernet integrity software utility that provides unmatched access for system support, debug and system design work. Available for download at www.national.com/appinfo/networks/ethernet_utility.html, this utility gives the user complete access for link, status, device configuration and network status monitoring, and has been developed to support current and future National Semiconductor products.
