Foundry Provides Next-Generation Data Centers With Industry's Most Scalable Wire-Speed Gigabit Ethernet Solution

BigIron RX-Series 48-port 10/100/1000 Mbps Module Establishes Industry Benchmark for Non-Blocking High Density Gigabit Ethernet Solution

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 19 / -- Foundry Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching, routing and application Web switching, today announced a wire-speed 48-port 10/100/1000 Mbps module for its award-winning BigIron RX-Series family of high-performance Layer 2/3 Ethernet switches. The new module increases the non-blocking Gigabit Ethernet capacity to 768 ports for a single switch and 2,304 ports in a standard 7 foot equipment rack. The high density configurations are ideally suited for high capacity server farms and high performance computing environments where the number of servers and compute nodes are driving demand for non-blocking interconnect solutions that can scale well beyond 500 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

The new mini RJ-21 48 port 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet module supports high density configurations without compromising Quality of Service (QoS), latency or throughput. All ports are non-blocking to ensure wire-speed performance. This is in contrast to other solutions on the market that achieve high density configurations using over-subscribed architectures that are subject to service degradation during periods of peak traffic or network abuse.

The new module utilizes compact mini RJ-21 connectors and cables to streamline cable management. This design reduces the number of cables by one- sixth compared to solutions that use standard RJ-45 Ethernet connectors and cables. Another important benefit is the module's power efficiency. A BigIron RX-16 chassis fully configured with 768 wire-speed Gigabit Ethernet ports requires less than 7 watts per gigabit port. This is 40% less power usage than competing products from other vendors. This savings will have a significant impact on the solution's annual cost of ownership.

"Data center class solutions must be able to scale to very high capacities and maintain wire-speed packet processing and forwarding to ensure application performance and integrity," said Bob Schiff, vice president and general manager of enterprise business unit for Foundry Networks. "The combination of high port capacity, non-blocking design and low power consumption make the BigIron RX-Series family of switches an ideal solution for a range of applications including Internet Exchanges, enterprise and service provider data centers and high-performance computing environments. The new 48-port 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet module extends the value of this solution, delivering the expandability and density required for the new application infrastructure."

About the BigIron RX-Series
The BigIron RX-Series family includes three chassis models, each supporting redundant management, redundant switch fabric and redundant power supply components with a full compliment of switching and routing functions. The BigIron RX-4 is a compact four rack unit (RU) high switch. It supports four half-slot port modules and has a switching capacity of 384 Gbps. The BigIron RX-8 is seven rack units in height, supports eight half-slot port modules and has a switching capacity of 768 Gigabits per second. The BigIron RX-16 is fourteen rack units in height, supports sixteen half-slot port modules, and has a switching capacity of 1.536 terabits per second. With its low profile design, the BigIron RX-16 switch can be stacked three high in a single seven-foot rack providing for as many as 192 wire-speed 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The BigIron RX-Series is designed to meet the needs of enterprise customers with starting configurations of 24 10/100/1000 Mbps ports in 4 RU space to 64 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports all using common technology. The introduction of the 48 port 10/100/1000 Mbps module offers an ideal solution for high performance environments, including Internet exchanges, data centers and high-performance computing installations, which will be able to take advantage of this massive density and horsepower.

Pricing and Availability
The RX-BI48T 48-port 10/100/1000 I/O module with mini RJ-21 connectors is available in the first quarter of 2006 and priced at $15,995 for US customers and $17,595 for International customers. More information is available at www.foundrynet.com.
