Exar Enters Ethernet Media Access Control (MAC) Market with EXcalibAR(TM)

First Multi-Port, Multi-Rate Device Offers Designers Unparalleled Intelligent QoS and Traffic Management Features

FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 24 / / -- Exar Corporation (NASDAQ:EXAR) entered the Ethernet MAC market with the introduction of the EXcalibAR family of multi-port, multi-rate MACs. Exar unveiled today a 24-port 10/100 and 10/100/1000 Ethernet MAC, the XRT95L524. This product is the first in a series of Ethernet MAC devices offering intelligent Quality of Service (QoS) and innovative traffic management features for metro access service cards, enterprise core switches, and metro Ethernet boxes.

"Customers needing more than 16-port aggregation capabilities now have a welcome alternative to adding an 8-port device," said Jehangir Parvereshi, director, strategic marketing, Optical Networking and Storage. "Unlike competitors' multi-chip approaches, the highly-integrated XRT95L524 can reduce overall component costs, and streamline the design of Ethernet line cards and Multi Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) service modules."

Key Product Features

The XRT95L524 offers non-blocking wire speed performance, supports an oversubscribed bandwidth of 4Gbs over a SPI-3 interface which provides a seamless interface to custom Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and network processors. The EXcalibAR family of multi-port, multi-rate IEEE 802.3 compliant MACs has many key features that distinguish the series from competitors' devices. These include flexible operating modes: 24 Fast Ethernet (FE) Reduced Media Independent Interface (RMII), 4 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) Gigabit Media Independent Interface (GMII), 20x FE and 2 GE simultaneously, loss-less flow control on valid jumbo frames and transmission length of up to 5km one way. The device also supports up to 192 flows -- each with up to 8 classes per port. In addition, it does class selection per flow via Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) tag, priority bits and Internet Protocol (IP) Differentiated Servers (DS) bits. It has an over-subscription bandwidth controlled packet scheduler, with class priority using Modified Deficit Round Robin (MDRR). These features offer a flexibility of design that is critical for high density service cards and client ports on Multi Service Access Platforms (MSAP) and edge routers and switches.

The XRT95L524 integrates Class of Service (CoS) with 16 queues per ingress port and extensive traffic management: policing, queue management and scheduling. Designers of metro Ethernet access and high-end Enterprise switching boxes can easily achieve congestion avoidance while ensuring that service providers can deliver on their Service Level Agreement (SLA) promise to their end-user.

Prices, Packages, Availability and Additional Information

Samples of the XRT95L524 are available now. The device is in a 580-pin TBGA package and operates at 1.8V core with 3.3V tolerant I/Os over the industrial temperature range. In 1k - 5k piece quantities the XRT95L524 is $199.00 and additional information on this product can be found at www.exar.com/product.php?ProdNumber=XRT95L524.
