New 6-channel Thermocouple Input Modules Simplify Remote Temperature Monitoring on an Ethernet Network

Acromag expands BusWorks® 900EN Series with thermocouple input modules to provide an easy and inexpensive solution for bringing temperature sensor data onto a Modbus/TCP network.

Wixom, MI: Acromag's new BusWorks® 965EN Input Modules interface thermocouple and millivolt signals directly to an Ethernet Modbus/TCP 10/100 network. The six-channel, inch-wide I/O modules operate independently of any buscoupler or I/O rack, nor do they require any special system power supply. These self-contained I/O modules are more cost and space-efficient for applications requiring fewer I/O channels by offering lower startup costs and higher density mounting. Setup is also faster and easier with embedded web pages allowing configuration using any standard web browser. No other software is required. Priced at only $500 for a four-input unit or $650 for six inputs, they are very cost-effective for applications that need to monitor a small quantity of thermocouples per site. Each module is only an inch wide with the highest density footprint available for compact mounting on DIN-rails. Flexible power requirements support operation on 15-36V DC power supplies.

Each unit accepts thermocouple/millivolt inputs with user-selectable ranges for Type J, K, T, R, S, E, B, or N sensors and bipolar ±100mV or ±1V DC signals. The 16-bit sigma-delta A/D converters and built-in CJC sensors ensure highly accurate measurements. Three-way 1500V AC isolation between the input, network and power circuits protects against surges and ground loops.

The I/O modules provide an isolated Modbus/TCP 10Base-T/100Base-TX network interface. Each module supports up to 10 sockets allowing communication with multiple masters. Automatic negotiation arbitrates 10/100 Mbps and full/half-duplex communication. Built-in watchdog timers monitor communication problems while self-diagnostic capabilities simplify maintenance and troubleshooting. A failsafe mode ensures outputs are sent to a safe state if a failure occurs.

Many other features ensure dependable operation. An internal microcontroller has integrated non-volatile memory for reliable storage of configuration parameters and can be reprogrammed repeatedly. And to visually confirm proper operation, LEDs indicate power, network activity, and individual channel status. The units are pending CE approvals and UL/cUL Class I Div. 2 listing.
