ESP's EVAP is First Low-Pressure Fuel Evaporative System Testing Unit BAR-Certified Under New California Smog Check Regulations

Nearly 10 million vehicles will require testing after Nov. 1, 2007

EAST GRANBY, Conn., Aug. 24 / / -- Environmental Systems Products (ESP), in partnership with Waekon, has earned the industry's first and only certification to provide California's Smog Check stations with low-pressure fuel evaporative testing equipment. The BAR-Certified EVAP unit is an innovative solution engineered specifically to help California achieve its clean air goals under the new emission regulations.

The low-pressure fuel evaporative testing (LPFET) regulations take effect Nov. 1, 2007, when all Smog Check stations must be equipped with certified equipment to maintain their licenses. The LPFET program, an enhancement of California's Smog Check Program, addresses ozone and federal clean air standards by locating leaks in the evaporative systems of vehicle fuel tanks and vapor lines.

ESP's EVAP is a portable, automated, self-contained testing unit, which is easy to operate and provides accurate results in all types of environmental conditions -- and with the speed that operators need. EVAP detects leaks measured in thousandths of inches, and operates concurrently with other Smog Check tests without slowing check station throughput. Fast-pass and fast-fail algorithms expedite test times and "false fails" are virtually 0% when used correctly. The compact design includes storage for all options and required tools, which provides ease of use and reduces test times.

"EVAP is the type of innovative solution that the Smog Check industry has come to expect from ESP when new challenges appear on the horizon," ESP President John Ruth said. To design this next-generation technology, he said, ESP collaborated with Waekon, whose 40 years of automotive industry engineering expertise created an unparalleled partnership.

Under the new California Department of Consumer Affairs Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) regulations, gasoline-powered passenger vehicles built between 1976 and 1995 must be tested yearly for evaporative emissions as part of standard smog check inspections.

Approximately 10 million vehicles are subject to testing and leak detection and repairs will reduce emission of unburned gasoline by 14 tons a day, according to projections by the California Air Resources Board.

ESP, which has the largest installed base of emissions testing equipment in California, is the first manufacturer to offer certified equipment to the state's 8,000 plus Smog Check station operators.

Smog Check station owners and managers are currently working with ESP sales teams to purchase EVAP units before the Nov. 1 deadline. ESP's field support representatives will provide customers with technical support during and after installation, to ensure that the LPFET program kicks off smoothly and successfully. Owners and managers can also call 1-888-377-0135 for assistance. Financing or leasing is available with a $100 down payment.

"With the Smog Check stations facing a deadline, ESP is prepared to provide the accurate and reliable testing solution they need to meet the state's requirements and help improve air quality for all California citizens," said John Bradley, ESP Vice President of Sales.
