California Micro Devices Broadens Award Winning PicoGuard XS® Family of ESD Protection Devices

Ideal for HDMI(TM) and DisplayPort(TM) Applications in Digital Consumer, PC and Mobile Applications

MILPITAS, Calif., Feb. 25 /-- California Micro Devices (NASDAQ:CAMD) today introduced the latest ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection devices in the XtremeESD(R) family, the CM1235 and CM1236. Both devices incorporate the award winning PicoGuard XS architecture that features integrated impedance matching with improved ESD performance. They feature 8 channels of ESD protection that meet the 8kV contact discharge requirement of the IEC61000-4-2 standard, while also meeting the 100 Ohm differential impedance matching requirements of the HDMI(TM) 1.3a and DisplayPort(TM) digital video standards. They are ideal for digital TVs, LCD displays, notebook computers, set top boxes and Blu-Ray recorders and players. The small size of the CM1235 also makes it ideal for portable applications including mobile phones, camcorders and digital still cameras.

Another member of the PicoGuard XS family, the CM1233, was recently awarded Electronic Products magazine's coveted "Product of the Year" award. The CM1235 offers the same impedance matching and 8kV protection as the CM1233, but in a footprint that is 70 percent smaller. The CM1236 is pin-compatible with the CM1233, but is an improved design offering even better impedance matching.

"As data rates continue to increase, the ability to add ESD protection without compromising signal integrity is extremely important," stated Joe Salvador, director of marketing for computing and digital consumer products. "The PicoGuard XS architecture enables ESD devices that are small enough for mobile phone applications while providing signal integrity that exceeds the most stringent requirements of high definition televisions and PC monitors."

CMD's PicoGuard XS Architecture

The CM1235 and CM1236 are based on the PicoGuard XS architecture that integrates inductors with the ESD diodes to improve impedance matching for high speed data lines. Traditionally, system designers must compensate for the capacitance of the ESD protection device by adding external inductance, eliminating capacitance under the signal traces near the ESD device, or both. These approaches add complexity and cost, and are PC board dependent, limiting the ability to use multiple board vendors. The CM1235 and CM1236 eliminate the need for these measures, providing matched impedance with no external compensation or components required, in a board-independent footprint.

CM1235 and CM1236 - Main Features

The CM1235 and CM1236 provide protection for four pairs of differential channels, offering 8kV contact discharge ESD protection in accordance with the IEC61000-4-2 standard. The integration of inductors with the ESD diodes enhances ESD protection as well as ensuring outstanding signal integrity. Compared with industry leading single stage ESD diode arrays, they offer:

-- Greater than 40% reduction in peak clamping voltage

-- 80% reduction in peak residual current

-- Greater than 10% reduction in total energy reaching the protected device

-- 100 Ohm differential impedance matching with no external compensation required

-- Close matching between lines

-- No Vp connection, eliminating backdrive and simplifying layout

-- Compact 16 pin TDFN package for reduced board space
