Invensys Ships Protean 4.1 Enterprise Software for the Process and Regulated Industries

Major new Protean software release reduces time-to-compliance and increases operational control through 21 CFR part 11 compliance support, business intelligence B2B capabilities, and shop floor integration

NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, USA, July 2, 2003 - Invensys Production Solutions, the Invensys business unit that provides enterprise software solutions for the process and regulated industries, has begun shipping a major new release of its Protean ERP software. This new release, Protean 4.1, supports 21 CFR part 11 compliance requirements, adds business intelligence and B2B functionality, shop floor integration leveraging the ISA 95 standards, and is implemented through cGMP-based methodologies.

Protean is a comprehensive enterprise software suite that helps process manufacturers manage business and plant operations more efficiently. Protean is used widely in the pharmaceutical, food & beverage, chemical and other regulated process industries.

"As if managing market and customer dynamics weren't challenge enough for process manufacturers, they must also contend with more regulatory compliance than just about any other sector. This new version of Protean will help tremendously by providing specific 21 CFR Part 11 capabilities, give better accessibility to shop floor data and will provide greater ability to leverage this information for more informed decisions throughout the supply chain," said Richard Howells, vice president of marketing for Invensys Production Solutions.

"With this latest Protean release, Invensys has taken a major step forward by being the first ERP supplier to provide a module based on the ISA 95 Web service standards. This new module will provide customers an ability to more readily connect to legacy plant floor systems, regardless of origin, thereby lowering costs of integration," said ARC Advisory Group vice president John Moore. "In this release, Invensys is also providing its Protean customers, which are predominately in the process industries, the functionality required to enable 21 CFR Part 11 compliance. As a core upgrade to the Protean ERP product, this feature will be provided to all customers on maintenance contracts-an important upgrade for them-and demonstration that Invensys intends to continue to support its customer base," concluded Moore.

The release of Protean 4.1 strengthens Invensys' leadership in delivering operational compliance and control solutions to process manufacturing industries. It helps improve their performance continuously by delivering the following benefits:
· Reduced time-to-compliance, through new functionality that supports the FDA's 21 CFR Part 11 e-signature and audit control and comprehensive, cGMP-base implementation methodology and validation services.
· Improved business decision making, through a new Business Intelligence Sales Template that enables easy extraction and analysis of real-time sales transaction data from the Protean sales module. CFOs, sales managers and logistics personnel, to name a few, can generate and analyze reports quickly and efficiently. The business intelligence template also draws on sales history, open orders and invoices information for proactive decision-making and sales optimization. Additionally, the sales template enables data warehouses to allow users to analyze and report on customer sales, costs of sales, profit margins sales-cost measures, shipment dates, open deliveries, closed deliveries, and invoiced deliveries.
· Improved supply chain communications, through new B2B server capabilities, which enable more effective cross-enterprise communication across the supply chain. The server leverages Web technologies to support EDI formats and alternative document exchange formats. The result is a personalized Web environment, which raises information visibility and enables online interaction with trading partners. This reduces overall cost of doing business by speeding cycle time and improving the accuracy of communications.
· Real-time manufacturing, through new shop floor web services built to the ISA 95 standards that link Protean to any shop floor execution system. This facilitates information sharing across all job functions, from sensor to supply chain by enabling users in different job functions to access the right data, in the right format and the right time.
· Reduced time to market, through the combination of Invensys Validation Technologies validation services, a cGMP-based implementation methodology and the Protean 4.1 product.
· Lower total cost of ownership, through a process industry adaptation of standard technologies such as Microsoft .NET, which enables easy, low-cost migration and upgrades.

"We are very pleased to announce this important new version of our Protean enterprise software. We are committed to the continuing advancement of Protean and PRISM functionality and technology to meet emerging needs expressed by customers. Many of those needs reflect the ever growing regulatory and compliance requirements, which are becoming such an important issue in the process industry space," said Sanjay Razdan, Vice President and General Manager of Invensys Production Solutions. "We are especially excited about the new 21 CFR Part 11 functionality in this release, which demonstrates one more way that customers can rely on us to deliver capabilities that enable operational compliance and control. Significant enhancements to our object technology framework are also keeping pace with the trend towards Web services-based integrations, thus lowering the cost of integrating Protean with other supply chain and shop floor control systems," Razdan concluded.

Protean 4.1 enterprise software is available for immediate shipment. Invensys can deliver Protean in the context of a full validation compliance program implemented by the engineers and regulatory specialists of Invensys Validation Technologies.
