Fast-setting Epocast® Epoxy Syntactics Introduced by Huntsman Advanced Materials

LOS ANGELES, June 30, 2004 - A family of rapid-setting, high-strength epoxy syntactics formulated in four different colors is now available from Huntsman Advanced Materials. The four lightweight Epocast 1633 epoxy syntactic materials are self-extinguishing and halogen-free. With a two to five-minute work life, the products are well suited for the rapid reinforcement of fasteners and inserts in honeycomb core aircraft components such as floorboards, bulkheads and overhead bins. Epocast 1633 epoxy syntactics are qualified to aircraft manufacturers' specifications including Boeing BMS 5-28, Type 18, Class 2 and Airbus AIMS 08-08-001-04.

The compounds attain rapid green strength, permitting insert handling in less than one hour at room temperature. After gelling at 77°F (25°C) and curing for five hours at 120°F (49°C) or two hours at 150°F (66°C), Epocast 1633 epoxy syntactics exhibit a compressive strength of 6,500 psi, lap shear strength of 1,400 psi and service temperature of 160°F (71°C).
