Original Press Release:
Highest Performance FlexTop Portable Workstation Incorporates Dual PCI-X 64bit/100MHz Slots
September 8, 2006, NextComputing of Nashua, NH announced today the availability of Dual PCI-X 64bit/100MHz slots in its portable, FlexTop engineering workstation, the NextDimension.
The NextDimension stands alone as the first FlexTop computer, an open standards, high performance, mobile workstation with extreme processing and graphics capabilities.
Combining Dual PCI-X 64bit/100MHz slots with the best in processor performance opens up new possibilities for FlexTop applications. The Open Standards functionality of the slots themselves, and the system overall, allow the use of two COTS PCI cards for performance enhancement and/or specific application functionality, and the increased bus speed of the PCI-X 64bit/100MHz is backwards compatible with all PCI cards.
Applications requiring PCI interface cards and compute intensive software programs can utilize this configuration of the NextDimension for specialized uses, such as network monitoring and management, network traffic and data generation, simulation applications, HDTV record/playback applications, image and streaming data capture, and reconfigurable computing. When combined with specialized software programs and PCI cards designed to enhance the performance of these programs, the NextDimension effectively becomes a dedicated appliance. Bundling the hardware and software provides ease of installation and maintenance, all in a portable form factor with an integrated screen and user interface, features not usually found in a classic appliance platform.
Bob Labadini, President and CTO of NextComputing points out: "Configuring the NextDimension in a bundled package, with application specific PCI cards and pre-installed software, allows ISVs, OEMs, and integrators to offer a customized appliance to end users with performance capabilities in a portable form factor, which is unprecedented."
Complex functions are enhanced with this configuration, such as those utilizing FPGA/DSP for reconfigurable computing. The NextDimension is well suited for development of tailored high performance DSP solutions for aerospace and defense, digital content creation (DCC), Oil and Gas, and a variety of other industries requiring advanced imaging. Most major DSP/FPGA manufacturers, now offer PCI-X 64/100 compatible interfaces, such as the Xilinx Virtex(TM)-5 FPGA family and Altera's Stratix® line.
Combining top of the line processors and dual PCI-X 64bit/100MHz slots increases the inherent Open Standards flexibility of the NextDimension. Processor offerings include AMD's 940-based Opteron(TM) processors, including dual, Dual Core 2.2GHZ and 2.6GHz models, Single Core 3GHz models, as well as AMD's low-wattage Opteron options, available in the NextDimension Cool and Quiet configuration. And recently, the company announced the adoption of the Next-Generation AMD Opteron(TM) processor family, featuring industry-leading performance-per-watt. The NextDimension is scheduled to offer this processor line by the end of September or early October.
Today's announcement follows a number of recent FlexTop feature enhancements NextComputing has made, including its HydraGraphics Configuration, supporting up to 6 displays, and the availability of Dual PCI Express slots. These additions are intended to maximize the flexibility of application usage.
NextComputing is known in the HPC community as an innovator for its engineering design talents, bringing to market the smallest, portable form factors with features capable of the most intensive graphics applications.
