New 35mm Rose Encoder for Pittman DC Motors Enables Multiple Line-Count Capability from One Module

HARLEYSVILLE, PA, January 3, 2003 -- A new 35mm ROSE (Reflective Optical Sensing) encoder developed exclusively for use with Pittman LO-COG® brush-commutated and ELCOM® brushless DC motors has been introduced by Pittman. Instead of requiring discrete modules for individual line-count applications, the new encoder provides an unprecedented capability to achieve multiple line counts utilizing only one module.

This new 35mm ROSE encoder for Pittman DC motors features an innovative PC board-based modular design and multi-tracked code discs to enable the widest range of resolutions (192, 200, 250, 256, 360, 400, 500, and 512 counts per revolution) utilizing a minimum number of parts. The PC board consists entirely of surface-mount components, which promotes flexibility in low tooling costs and quick turnaround to accommodate custom control electronics.

The new encoder is an incremental, non-contacting rotary-to-digital feedback device translating real-time shaft angle, speed, and direction of rotation to TTL-compatible outputs. Outputs are two-channel, in quadrature, with medium resolution encoding. Signal conditioning options (all on board) include an RS-422 high-speed differential line driver, pull-up resistors, and additional filtering capacitors.

Pittman brush and brushless DC motors are ideal for use in a wide range of industries, including data storage, medical/Biotech, semiconductor, automation, commercial aviation, hobby, and others requiring high performance and reliability.
