Emerson uses PlantWeb with FOUNDATION(TM) Fieldbus devices and DeltaV(TM) systems to enable completely unmanned operation of Champion West Field platform
AUSTIN, TEXAS (May 9, 2006) - Emerson Process Management today announced that its PlantWeb® digital automation architecture and system integration services have helped Brunei Shell Petroleum Co. Sdn Bhd (BSP) start up its Phase III Champion West oil and gas field platform. The platform, located off the coast of Brunei, operates completely unmanned.
PlantWeb uses a FOUNDATION(TM) Fieldbus network of intelligent devices and Emerson's DeltaV(TM) digital system to provide an operational overview of the Phase III platform, which is monitored by engineers and operators at the main manned complex 10 km away, on the Champion West Drilling Platform - 1 (CWDP-1). The Phase III platform installation also features remote control and monitoring from Onshore Control Centre, in Brunei.
Emerson Malaysia is responsible for design, engineering, configuration, and commissioning of the PlantWeb digital automation solution. The contract was awarded in 2004, and the platform was commissioned and started up in December 2005.
The installed PlantWeb architecture included Emerson's DeltaV(TM) digital automation system, networked with intelligent field devices using the open standard FOUNDATION(TM) fieldbus communications technology. Emerson supplied smart digital devices including Rosemount® pressure, level and temperature transmitters; Micro Motion® Coriolis flow meters; and Fisher® valves with FIELDVUE® digital valve controllers.
The Emerson instrumentation and equipment on the Phase III platform interfaced with that of other international vendors using open, standards-based FOUNDATION Fieldbus and OPC technology. The DeltaV system connected to third-party shutdown systems, multiphase meters, and a DCS on another platform.
"Champion West illustrates the exceptional capabilities of Emerson Process Management in the offshore industry," said Mike Train, president of Emerson Process Management Asia Pacific. "We were delighted to have been named to supply PlantWeb digital architecture and services for the Brunei Shell Petroleum project."
The Champion West project is one of the various projects Emerson has completed for Shell companies. Others included the Malampaya offshore platform for Shell Philippines, the E-11 Hub for Sarawak Shell, and South Furious for Sabah Shell. Most are unmanned, and use PlantWeb digital architecture.
