Emerson Network Power and Sun Microsystems Collaborate to Optimize Data Center Infrastructure for Deployment of New Sun Blade Servers

Columbus, Ohio [June 25, 2007] - Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity(TM), today announced a joint development effort with Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ:SUNW) focused on defining and developing a high-efficiency power and cooling infrastructure for advanced High-Performance Computing (HPC) data centers. This initiative will enable the Sun Blade(TM) 6000 and Sun Blade 8000 server platforms to be deployed with zero impact on data center cooling.

A key enabler is a Liebert Blade Thermal Assessment designed specifically to assist Sun customers in deploying their Sun Blade servers. As part of an introductory offer, the on-site assessment is available at no charge for up to 5,000 square feet of data center space with an existing or planned Sun Blade Scalable Unit for HPC system*. Assessments, which must be scheduled prior to December 31, 2007, will be performed by a local Liebert cooling consultant.

The two organizations will also collaborate on:

Joint program validating Liebert cooling solutions' ability to eliminate the impact of heat dissipation from the Sun Blade 6000 and Sun Blade 8000 Modular System platforms.
The continued deployment of Liebert XD cooling systems in Sun engineering labs, which create HPC environments for testing and development of power and cooling technologies with future generations of Sun servers.

"Our two organizations share a common goal of driving greater efficiency in business-critical information systems while simultaneously enhancing our customers' ability to use information technology to drive growth and manage change," said Fred Stack, vice president of marketing, Liebert Environmental Solutions, Emerson Network Power. "Through closer collaboration, we can take a more holistic approach to data center operations and together drive a level of efficiency and performance that exceeds what either organization could achieve independently."

"Power and cooling have quickly become top-of-mind challenges for many of our customers, especially as they drive for higher density and higher performance," said Bjorn Andersson, director, HPC and Integrated Systems, Systems Group, Sun Microsystems. "We at Sun are excited about the collaboration with Emerson Network Power to drive technology for solving today's cooling issues with a platform that is well positioned to meet anticipated needs."

Sun Blade Scalable Units are scalable building blocks at the rack level with integrated Sun Blade 6000 server modules, networking, and cabling pre-packaged in a Sun Rack. Sun Blade Scalable Units simplify the configuration of Sun Blade solutions for HPC. Each Sun Blade Scalable Unit is built with server modules containing either AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon CPUs with Sun Solaris pre-installed, and includes InfiniBand fabric and networking.

The innovative Liebert XD system provides high-capacity overhead or rack-adjacent cooling that supplements existing room cooling systems. Using a high-efficiency pumped refrigerant, the Liebert XD system has been tested in operation with Sun servers and can neutralize all of the anticipated heat that would be generated by a rack with four fully configured Sun Blade 6000 Modular Systems. In addition to providing unparalleled scalability, the Liebert XD system also reduces operating expenses. It can slash cooling-related energy costs by up to 30 percent compared to traditional approaches to data center cooling, which allows the allocation of more energy for IT applications.

Sun Microsystems and Emerson Network Power are also both participants in The Green Grid, which is focused on creating a forum for companies to develop meaningful, platform-neutral standards, measurement methods, processes and new technologies to improve energy efficient performance of the global data center.
