Emerson Invests In "Energy Responsible" Automation Solutions for Delivery of Incremental Energy from Alternative Fuels

Technology and expertise help generation operators and process manufacturers improve economics and environment

Orlando Florida (February 4, 2008) Emerson Process Management today announced its latest new products from ongoing investments in energy responsible technology. Also reviewed were the economic and environmental advantages of a sampling of Emerson's alternative fuels projects around the world.

"World energy demand is expected to reach the equivalent of more than 10 trillion tons of crude oil by 2010, and nearly 16 trillion equivalent tons by 2030," commented Peter Zornio, chief strategic officer, Emerson Process Management. "Renewable, hydroelectric and nuclear sources will account for more than 10 percent of this total, with coal representing nearly one-fourth. Clearly, process automation will be one of the enablers of realizing this growth in the most efficient and energy responsible way possible. Innovative technologies and solutions are important to meeting the global demands, and to enable new sources of energy to become economically feasible."

Emerson's latest products and technology ranged from Ovation® SCADA software for wind energy management, to new Fisher® C1 Series "energy responsible" controllers and transmitters for oil and gas operations, Rosemount Analytical® AccuMax(TM) technology for boiler and furnace operation improvement, and Rosemount® sapphire-tube enclosed thermocouples for gasification applications.

The SCADA software for wind energy management is part of Emerson's portfolio of SCADA solutions for renewable energy which includes hydro power and solar power, among others. The World Wind Energy Association expects total installed capacity for wind energy to grow from roughly 74,000 MW in 2006 to 160,000 MW in 2010 - and increase of more than 116 percent. The new software helps to efficiently manage the growing assets of individual wind farms or entire fleets.

Fisher C1 Series controllers improve control reliability and safety while saving up to $1400 of gas annually and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by decreasing natural gas lost to the atmosphere. The Rosemount Analytical AccuMax technology helps boiler and furnace operators achieve higher efficiencies and lower nitrogen oxide and greenhouse gas emissions by more accurate flue gas oxygen measurement. The patented Rosemount sapphire-tube enclosed sensors have triple the life of conventional thermocouples in difficult gasification process conditions, and dual pressure seals prevent release of toxic emissions from the reactor that can result in case of sensor breakage.

Emerson's alternative fuels projects range from wind and hydropower to first generation biofuels including bio-ethanol, second generation biofuels including bio-diesel, to synfuels including coal, petcoke, and heavy oil gasification. Emerson has been selected for digital automation for clean energy solutions by Rentech, Inc. The Company has developed and patented the Rentech Process which transforms under-utilized domestic energy resources into valuable and clean alternative fuels and chemicals. These energy resources include coal, petroleum coke, biomass and municipal solid waste. The greenhouse gas footprint of fuels from the Rentech Process is significantly below that of petroleum-derived fuels.

Emerson cited its unique technology and expertise for gasification processes, including PlantWeb® digital plant architecture plus engineering, project management, and commissioning services, and its innovative Smart Wireless technology. Emerson's Smart integrated SIS tightly integrates the large number of safety points around a gasifier helping operators to safer, more reliable, and better controlled process units.

Emerson and its PlantWeb® architecture are digitally automating heavy oil gasification to power oil sands upgraders at both the Opti Nexen Long Lake and Northwest Upgraders facilities in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. The company is also digitally automating Fujian refinery gasifiers in China, as well as gasifiers at a coking and chemical plant in China.

Emerson is digitally automating a 3-plant ethanol facility that will produce more than 1 million liters of ethanol per day in Thailand. Emerson's Bristol® OpenEnterprise software is providing supervisory control at an npower offshore and onshore wind farm facility in the United Kingdom.

For the estimated 5- to 7-percent of demand forecast for nuclear supply, a recently announced extension to an agreement with Westinghouse attests to Emerson's strengths as an automation provider. The 10-year extension is for Emerson to provide key technology and automation of nuclear power plants that use the Westinghouse AP1000(TM) design. Westinghouse will use Emerson's Ovation(TM) expert control and information system designed specifically to automate power generation.

"We are pleased at the opportunity to combine our technologies and experience to help these owner-operators realize their plans for economic and environmental performance," summarized Zornio. "We are committed to continued investment in expertise, products, and solutions for responsible energy growth."
