EMCORE Announces Full Production Release of 20 Gbps Double Data Rate Optical Media Converter Module

SOMERSET, N.J., Nov. 15 / - EMCORE Corporation (NASDAQ:EMKR), a leading provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber optic, satellite, and solar power markets, today announced release to full production status for its QTR3500 Double Data Rate (DDR) Optical Media Converter (OMC). The product has been sampling to major customers for over six months, and is successfully meeting growing customer needs for double data rate InfiniBand® links, among other applications. This product marks the next generation of copper-to-fiber media converters with 20 Gbps bandwidth and 150m extended reach capability for double data rate InfiniBand. The product is backward compatible with single data rate (SDR) InfiniBand, 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE), and Fiber Channel applications.

The QTR3500 allows IT managers a cost effective solution to extend their data link distances from the standard 15m over 4x copper cable to 150m using industry standard MTP/MPO optical cable. The QTR3500 electrical interface mates directly into industry standard MDI electrical sockets used in DDR InfiniBand and 10GBASE-CX4 applications. The QTR3500 is field upgradeable and provides a pay as you go solution. The scalable 20 Gbps net bandwidth is transmitted with four transmit and receive optical channels that are transparent to the user. In addition, the 1 Watt power dissipation of the media converter provides what EMCORE believes to be the smallest and most power efficient electrical to optical solution available for these applications.

"The QTR3500 is designed to be the highest bandwidth solution for extending link distances in the growing double data rate InfiniBand market. In addition, it is an extremely versatile product that is ideal for a wide variety of applications, including enterprise data centers, high performance computing, telecom central offices, defense and high-end test equipment," said Robert Bryan, Vice President and General Manager of EMCORE Fiber Optics division. "The QTR3500 offers an attractive combination of high performance and low cost in an innovative form factor for either extending bandwidth in-system or interconnecting between systems."

Dr. Bryan added, "EMCORE is the market leader in Optical Media Converter technology and has seen steadily increased demand as InfiniBand and other applications require increased bandwidth at an affordable cost."

"The QTR3500 DDR Optical Media Converter is an extremely versatile product that allows Voltaire's 20 Gbps DDR InfiniBand solutions to reach the distances we need," said Peter Waxman, Vice President Sales, North America at Voltaire. "We are seeing growing demand for DDR interconnects by customers seeking an IO solution to fully exploit the additional throughput provided by multi-core machines."

Last year, in 2005, EMCORE's standard data rate QTR3400 modules were showcased at the 2005 Supercomputing Conference. This year, EMCORE will take the next step and demonstrate the double data rate QTR3500 at the upcoming 2006 Supercomputing Conference (http://sc06.supercomputing.org/).
