Low-Cost, Small Footprint Embedded Controllers



January 31, 2005...esd electronics, Inc. announces the introduction of the EPPC-405 Embedded Controller, a low-cost, stand-alone 200 MHz Power PC computer for all types of industrial automation applications. The EPPC-405 supports IEC61131-3 programming as well as various operating systems including LINUX, RTLinux, QNX, vxWorks, and RTOS, including on-board software devices. With its small footprint (only 4.5 in. x 3.5 in. x 0.75 in.) and complete programmability, the EPPC-405 offers a powerful tool for CAN, CANopen, and DeviceNet systems.

EPPC-405 incorporates a powerful IBM PPC405GP, 32 bit processor, with either 200 or 266 MHz, enabling performance up to 375 MIPS. It comes with an Ethernet interface for 10 MBit/sec and 100 MBit/sec nets, and is accessible as 10/100 BaseT via an RJ45 connector in the front panel. One or two electrically-isolated CAN interfaces and controllers, and one or two RS-232 serial interfaces, are standard as part of the package. Fiberoptic and DeviceNet interfaces are available as options.

Another model of the EPPC-405, the EPPC-405-UC, also offers two USB host interfaces in addition to two serial interfaces (RS-232 and RS-485) and two CAN interfaces. Both models feature a strong, compact, lightweight aluminum case without fan cooling and DIN rail-mountable TS 35 housings.

The EPPC controllers come with CoDeSys Programming Software, an IEC61131-3 Programming Tool and Run Time System applicable for Windows supporting 683xx and Power-PC-based processors. All five programming languages of the standard IEC61131-3 are supported:

CoDeSys enables full integration of input and output devices via the CAN bus for CANopen as well as DeviceNet or CAN Layer-2.
