Elekta's Monaco 5 Treatment Planning System to Make Its AAPM Radiation Physics Conference Debut

Monaco 5 joins latest version of MOSAIQ in spotlight at 2014 American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Annual Meeting

AUSTIN, Texas - AAPM Booth #231 - Monaco® 5 is scheduled to make its AAPM debut at the organization's 56(th) Annual Meeting and Exhibition, July 20-24 in Austin, Texas. The latest version of this advanced treatment planning system consolidates the best of Elekta's treatment planning solutions into a single system and features a new system architecture and graphical user interface.

Elekta's theme for AAPM is The Power of Care, a concept that includes technology and people working together to support positive patients outcomes.

"The enhanced graphical interface in Monaco 5 is a tremendous change," says Lennart Jahnke, PhD, physicist at University Medical Center Mannheim. "The new ribbon-based format is significantly cleaner than previous versions. The screen seems less crowded and 'busy'; everything is now in a single window on the lower side of the screen, including the beams, the prescription and the IMRT constraints."

The latest version of Monaco now supports the full spectrum of radiotherapy techniques, including VMAT, IMRT and 3D conformal radiation therapy. Monaco 5 is especially well equipped for sophisticated stereotactic therapies, such as SRS and SRT, with added planning support for specialized beam shaping solutions, including circular bones. The system also includes the definitive Monte Carlo dose calculation engine.

"Having all the delivery techniques in a single system, including collapsed cone, 3D, IMRT, VMAT and the Monte Carlo algorithm is very important to us," says Jamie Harris, MS DABR, staff physicist at Avera Medical Group (Sioux Falls, South Dakota), which converted from Siemens equipment to Elekta recently. "There is less time and hassle, because the workflow can be coordinated through just one computer workstation. And having Elekta as our one vendor for the linac and treatment planning software has increased interoperability - everything is streamlined and all the systems 'talk' to each other."

Harris adds that VMAT planning with Monaco 5 is excellent.

"Monaco 5 does a great job of optimizing all the parameters you have control over," she says. "The parameters seem to have been minimized to the point where you don't have to put in a whole lot of effort to get a good VMAT plan."

MOSAIQ® receives meaningful use Stage 2 certification

MOSAIQ version 2.6 also debuts at AAPM, featuring its recent certification for Stage 2 meaningful use under the Drummond Group's Electronic Health Records Office of the National Coordinator Authorized Body (ONC-ACB) program. Healthcare providers using the EHR systems of certified vendors are qualified to receive federal stimulus monies upon demonstrating meaningful use of the technology - a key component of the federal government's push to improve clinical care delivery through the adoption and effective use of EHRs by U.S. healthcare providers.

Demonstrators at the Elekta booth will also highlight Elekta Cloud Solutions, which provides complete oncology software hosting services for MOSAIQ, eliminating costly hardware purchases and upgrades, while affording exceptional application performance and reliable, secure data protection. The portfolio of Elekta Cloud Solutions will continue to expand, enabling users more flexible deployment options, such as Monaco treatment planning in the cloud.

Customer events during AAPM

During AAPM, Elekta will host a series of educational events during which users have the opportunity to share their clinical experiences. All events will be held at the Hilton Austin adjacent to the Austin Convention Center. Each event offers MPCEC credits through CAMPEP.

On July 19, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Elekta will host a Stereotactic QA, Planning and Dosimetry Symposium. Presentations and discussions will include linear accelerator setup, quality assurance and the latest advancements in treatment planning, delivery techniques and dosimetry. A reception follows the conference.

On July 21, 12:15 - 1:45 p.m., Elekta will hold concurrent lunch and learn programs, one on Brachytherapy and one on Leksell GammaPlan®.

On July 22, 12:15 - 1:45 p.m., Elekta will host a treatment planning lunch and learn symposium.
