New GE UltraStart® T8 0-10V Dimming Electronic Ballasts Provide Full-Range Dimming for Comprehensive Lighting Energy Management Strategies

CLEVELAND - The new UltraStart® T8 0-10V Programmed Start Dimming Electronic Ballasts from GE Consumer & Industrial help companies move beyond traditional energy efficiency and take energy management strategies to new heights. These new dimming ballasts offer all the features of the existing GE UltraStart® T8 & T5 fixed-light-output programmed start ballast family-parallel lamp operation, fast <700ms starting times and high efficiency cathode cutout-with the additional capability of full-range dimming of 100 to 3 percent in T8 linear fluorescent lamps.

Such total control makes these new ballasts ideal for scene control, daylight harvesting, occupancy sensing, light tuning, load shedding and demand response-energy-saving strategies for meeting strict energy legislation and energy efficiency goals. In settings such as office buildings, retail chains, schools, hospitals and government buildings, the dimming ballasts provide the proper ambiance and user control to set preferred light levels for specific tasks and improved employee comfort.

"Energy saving strategies such as daylight harvesting and the growth of the Smart Grid are increasingly incorporating automated light controls and dimming to contribute on the demand side of a Smart Grid," says Jeff Plaskon, ballast product manager, GE Consumer & Industrial. "These new GE UltraStart® T8 dimming ballasts meet the need head-on with full-range dimming that reduces energy consumption and contributes to peak demand management."

The UltraStart® T8 0-10V Programmed Start Dimming Electronic ballasts are offered in multi-volt 120-277V 2, 3, 4 lamp H high ballast factor (1.18-.03BF) for high-bay or high light, high temperature applications and multi-volt 120-277V 1, 2, 3, 4 lamp N normal ballast factor (.88 - .03BF) for commercial/low bay applications. The ballasts offer nearly identical energy savings as high-efficiency T8 instant-start ballasts from 100 percent to 60 percent (high ballast factor) and 100 percent to 80 percent (normal ballast factor) due to their high efficiency cathode cutout at the top end of dimming in their design. These ballasts also offer very low power consumption at the low 3 percent light level as well, which is key for energy savings as well as ambiance. Almost all other fluorescent dimming ballasts available in the market are series wired.

The parallel lamp operation of the UltraStart® dimming ballasts keeps lamps working when other lamps in a fixture fail, a performance feature that significantly extends group re-lamping time intervals or cuts spot re-lamping costs by more than double. Striation control built into the ballasts serves customers using the energy saving lamps when dimming.

The ballasts meet the new NEMA LL-9 standard for dimming F32T8 lamps. This is a standard that allows for an open dimming specification among lamp and ballast manufacturers. Parallel lamp operation is a significant advantage in reliably meeting the new NEMA LL-9 standard and providing consistent lamp-to-lamp filament heating during deep dimming in multi-lamp fixtures. GE is offering a full lamp warranty when dimming with UltraStart® T8 0-10V Programmed Start Dimming Electronic ballasts as well as a five-year ballast warranty. All ballasts are RoHS compliant.
