Newly Certified Hazardous Location Electrical Connectors Now Available from Amphenol

Sidney, NY, October 2003 - Amphenol Industrial Operations announces that its Star-Line EX Series of electrical connectors has successfully completed ATEX update testing for use in hazardous environments, as defined by the National Electrical Code (NEC), Article 505. The new Star-Line EX connectors provide safe interconnections to modular equipment, making them ideal for harsh applications, such as onshore and offshore oil drilling, petrochemical refineries, aircraft re-fuelling stations, paint spray booths, and other manufacturing and production environments.

The new Zone 1 rated connectors eliminate hard wiring to terminal blocks enclosed in junction boxes, providing quick and safe interconnections to modular equipment. Quick set up and tear down is made easy by simply mating and unmating the connectors, which reduces the need for costly job site rewiring and retests.

Star-Line EX aluminum connector housings are both lightweight and rugged, precision-machined from high-tensile-strength bar stock and finished with a hard anodized coating to 40 points on the Rockwell C scale. Stainless steel and brass housings are also available.

The new connectors offer the industry's broadest range of backshell arrangements and contact inserts for power (up to 1135 amps at 1000 volts), signal (up to 143 contacts), and mixed power and control applications. All contact inserts are interchangeable and reversible to suit specific needs. Contacts are made from copper with a standard silver plating, and are available with an optional gold plating.

Conductors are readily terminated to easily accessible wire terminals using solder, crimp, or pressure-fit designs. Cable housings with ample wiring space slip over the conductors after termination, eliminating cumbersome handling and seating of inserts with conductors attached. Armored and sheathed cables built to IEEE-45/UL1309, IEC, BS, DIN and JIC standards as well as unarmored cables and flexible cables, including SOOW-A, W, G-GC, and DLO, are compatible with the new Star-Line EX connector series.

The new connectors are rated IP68-8, and are listed under Zone 1 areas Eex d IIc T6 and Eex de IIc T6. The Star-Line EX Series features a dielectric strength of 1800 V and heat resistance up to 750°F (399°C)

Pricing for a Star-Line EX connector starts at $350. Delivery is 2-4 weeks ARO.
