Original Press Release:

New Electrical Connector Links Solar Modules to DC/AC Converters

HARRISBURG, Pa., September 4 - Tyco Electronics, a business segment of Tyco International LTD., today introduced the SOLARLOK interconnection system for sale in North America. The continued growth and expansion of the photovoltaic industry requires a robust interconnect system that accommodates mass production of solar modules as well as facilitates quick and easy field installation. The SOLARLOK interconnection system accomplishes both with a new, flexible, UL and TUV approved system that accommodates both serial and parallel solar module connections. The system is comprised of several simple and easily installed components.

The Connector
The connectors used in the SOLARLOK interconnection system allow for rapid assembly using hand tools but can also utilize high speed, semi-automatic applicators as well. The silver-plated, copper alloy contacts are rated at 25A with up to 50 mating cycles and are sealed to an IP67 environmental rating when mated with another SOLARLOK connector. Contact resistance is typically 1 milliohm or less and affords the designer a low resistance separable interface. These contacts are easily crimped onto 10,12 or 14 AWG stranded wire with a manual hand tool or semi-automatic stripper-crimper. Connector assembly is as simple as snapping the crimped leads into the connector housing and tightening a sealing nut. The connector housings are offered. in positive and negative polarity keying to help eliminate mis-mating of connectors. The weatherproof housing is molded from UV resistant polypheneylene oxide to provide maximum resistance to ultraviolet radiation and ozone.

Junction Boxes
The SOLARLOK junction boxes feature internal quick connects to aid assembly and termination to the photovoltaic panel. Two junction box styles with IP65 ratings are available to accommodate either serial or parallel interconnection schemes. Within each style, a number of connectorized and direct-wire configurations are available to accommodate varying wiring preferences and requirements. The junction boxes are simple and easy to use while maintaining a low profile and high current carrying capability. Customized junction boxes can be delivered pre-configured with diodes, jumpers, plugs and pigtails if necessary.

In addition to the connectors and junction boxes, the SOLARLOK interconnection system also includes a number of optional accessories such as latch clips and T-connectors as well as a complete line of tooling for stripping, crimping and extracting contacts. An engineering development kit prepackaged with connectors and hand application tools is also available.
