Original Press Release:

Avery Dennison Elastic Staple(TM) Improves Productivity While Decreasing Package Waste

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - November 7, 2004 - The automated Avery Dennison Elastic Staple(TM) system attaches products to header cards in seconds with a durable elastic fastener. The system helps packaging operations increase productivity by as much as 50 percent over manually applied packaging options, such as twist-ties or cable ties. And, by eliminating the need for plastic packaging materials, such as clamshells and skin packs, products packaged with the elastic staple are lighter in weight, minimizing shipping costs and making it an environmentally conscious alternative.

Elastic Staple applicators are available in both a variable needle system and a single needle system.

The variable needle applicator straps an Elastic Staple around the product, tightly securing it to a header card. Ideal for products like hand tools, toys and kitchen utensils, the Elastic Staple allows consumers to try the product at the point-of-sale without destroying the packaging. The variable needle system can be used as an alternative to twist-tie, metal staple, clamshell, skin pack, tape and other conventional fastening technologies.

The single needle system inserts the fastener's T-end directly through the product, ideal for soft products such as hosiery, carpeting material or nylon webbing. Elastic Staple fasteners stretch to ensure a proper fit, conforming tightly to the product and securely fastening multiple layers. The single needle system effectively pairs together bulkier items and can be used as a labor-saving alternative to thread bar tack, tape, plastic bags and other forms of packaging.

Both systems can be operated as a stand-alone unit or easily can be integrated into an existing packaging line. Avery Dennison works in conjunction with automation partner Meyers Design and Manufacturing, Archdale, N.C., to develop custom solutions for each manufacturer.

Current customers include Cooper Hand Tools, Draper Tools, Fiskars Brands Inc. (Gerber® Legendary Blades and Royal® Floor Mats), The Hillman Group (key manufacturer Access Technologies), Ghidini (Italian manufacturer of kitchen gadgets) and Rose America (U.S. manufacturer of pet collars and leashes).
