Microchip Technology Unveils Industry's First Serial EEPROMs Supporting VESA E-EDID 1.3 Standard

IE+2C(TM) Serial EEPROMs offers simple, low-cost solution for designers who must meet stringent statndards of next-generation monitors and beyond

CHANDLER, Ariz., Jan. 23, 2002 - Microchip Technology (Nasdaq: MCHlP) today announced the first serial EEPROMs adhering to the new Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) Enhanced Extended Display Identification Data (E-EDID) 1.3 Standard for PC monitors, projectors and flat panel displays. With the new 24LC22A and 24LCS22A serial EEPROMs, manufacturers will have two simple, cost-effective alternatives to meet the plug-and-play standards for the high-end displays of today and the future.

With a 256 x 8-bit dual-mode serial EEPROM, the 24LC22A and 24LCS22A implement both the DDC1(TM) and DDC2(TM) operating modes, including recovery to DDC1, as defined by VESA. The devices also support the new VESA E-EDID monitor specification for next-generation displays. Additional features include a 2-wire serial interface bus that is 12CN compatible, ESD protection greater than 4000 volts and a wide operating range of 2.5 volts to 5.5 volts. The 24LCS22A provides a software-enabled hardware write protection pin that allows the user to write-protect the memory contents automatically during in-circuit or gang programming. Markets targeted for the 24LC22A and 24LCS22A include advanced PC monitor applications, PC projectors and flat panel displays.

Available in standard 8-lead PDIP and SOIC packages, the price for a 10,000-unit quantity is $0.50 each for the 24LC22A and $0.55 for the 24LCS22A. Samples and volume production are currently available.
