SmartSignal Strengthens Leadership Position In Equipment Condition Monitoring Market With Release of eCM 2.0

Significant Feature Upgrade Adds Diagnostics to State-of-the-Art Early Fault Detection Capabilities

St. Louis, Electric Power Conference - March 18, 2002 - SmartSignal Corporation, the leading provider of Equipment Condition Monitoring(TM) (eCM) software, announced today the availability of eCM 2.0(TM), a significant upgrade of its award-winning early warning product. This product upgrade is the first in the industry to integrate advanced diagnostic functionality with early warning information, enabling companies to determine the reason for a potential equipment failure long before failure occurs.

SmartSignal's eCM fault detection software provides companies in the power, aviation and other industries with advanced early warning of abnormal machine and process behavior that lead to failure. As such, eCM can maximize asset availability and improve ROA in any industry by reducing unplanned downtime and enabling planned downtime to be more strategically used.

"Not only can eCM 2.0 detect potential equipment issues sooner than other early warning systems, it can also identify problems that are typically missed by other systems," says SmartSignal President and CEO Gary W. Conkright. "Based on in-depth research, we estimate that a 600 megawatt plant using SmartSignal
technology could save $1 million dollars per year."

eCM 2.0 Feature Enhancements

Advanced Diagnostics

For the first time in the industry, diagnostic functionality has been integrated into an advanced early warningsystem. "Diagnostic applications typically operate after equipment fails," says Conkright. "For the first time, SmartSignal has combined early detection of failure and the ability to diagnose before failure occurs. This represents a major advance in early warning technology and raises the bar significantly in terms of product functionality."

The sophisticated rules methodology in version 2.0 enables companies to embed their expertise into the software. Armed with information on the root cause of failure and the ability to classify failure modes based on known fault signatures, eCM 2.0 identifies problems faster than any other monitoring system while
avoiding false incident reports. The product's diagnostic capabilities further enable operations and maintenance teams to focus their attention on just a few developing equipment issues in their plant or fleet.

Expanded WatchList(TM)

eCM 2.0's proprietary monitoring techniques sort through hundreds of sensors and systems in real time to detect and classify problems on a WatchList(TM). Release 2.0 has strengthened this already powerful capability.

"Adding an automatic adaptation feature lets the product adapt to new yet normal operating conditions on the fly," says George Turanchik, VP, Client Services at SmartSignal. "Moreover, the improved WatchList provides even stronger fleet-wide monitoring capabilities and delivers new enterprise-wide benefits, while still providing the same drill-down diagnostic capabilities on an individual piece of equipment that our clients know and value."

eCM Workbench(TM)

eCM 2.0 also includes Workbench, a new analytical and administrative tool which automates the installation and deployment process. Using eCM Workbench companies can define their assets, input data, create and test models, as well as
set tolerances through an easy-to-use Microsoft® Windows(R)-based interface. Workbench can also be used to configure a WatchList to identify known problems as well as to exclude abnormal, but completely benign, changes in equipment operations.
