Echelon Demonstrates Fast Payback Smart Street Lighting and Smart Buildings Solutions Built on Its Energy Control Networking Platform

Proven, Open Standard, Multi-Application Software-Driven Platform Drives Energy Efficiency and Grid Responsiveness

FRANKFURT, Germany - At Light+Building 2012, the world's leading trade fair for Architecture and Technology, Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) will be highlighting several Smart Street Lighting and Smart Buildings solutions built on Echelon's energy control networking platform. Powered by its Control Operating System (COS), Echelon's platform transforms streetlights and buildings into intelligent, energy-efficient, remotely managed device networks. By offering the ability to add third-party applications from market leading ecosystem partners, Echelon allows city managers and building professionals to architect multi-application, multi-vendor smart buildings and smart cities and eliminates the cost of duplicate infrastructure.

This ability stems from Echelon's vision at its inception 20 years ago of low-cost embedded monitoring and control technology in every electrically controlled device in the world. Today, Echelon's energy control networking platform is embedded in more than 100 million devices, 35 million homes, 300,000 buildings and 500 cities. The energy control networking platform by Echelon supports multiple applications and drives energy-savings of 20% or more, reduces outage duration, reduces carbon footprint, and more.

Smart Street Lighting - The Foundation of a Smart City Echelon's Smart Street Lighting solutions are comprised of smart transceivers that control individual streetlight ballasts, Echelon's SmartServer segment controller, and application software from a range of partners installed at the data center. An optional radio frequency (RF)/power line (PL) bridge connects segments of streetlights for simple low cost installation. Echelon's Smart Street Lighting solution delivers dependable lighting at 30% less cost than low-energy luminaires alone. Echelon partners with several Energy Services Companies (ESCOs) that provide attractive financing, which can save precious city financial resources.

"With our open standard platform, cities can mix best-of-breed technologies from many different luminaire suppliers," said Varun Nagaraj, senior vice president of Product Marketing and Management at Echelon. "But, they can also leverage their investment to add new smart city applications without the cost of needing an expensive second or third infrastructure. In fact, many cities are controlling more than just street lights in the first 24-months after deployment."

Echelon's Smart Street Lighting solution can be easily extended to control other devices, such as parking lot lights, sprinklers, traffic signals, or to collect environmental data such as pollution ratio, air composition, humidity, temperature, traffic, and to monitor street noise levels.

At the Light+Building fair, Echelon is announcing the availability of a new Smart Street Lighting Specification Guide that leading cities have used to help them introduce multiple smart city applications. To download a copy of the Smart Street Lighting Specification Guide, please go to http://info.echelon.com/OpenStreetLightingSpecificationGuide.html.

In addition, Echelon will be demonstrating a mix of outdoor lighting controllers for multiple types of lamps, ballasts and generators, and software applications from Flashnet, Rongwen and Streetlight.Vision.

Smart Buildings - The First Step in Grid Awareness Echelon's Smart Buildings solutions are based on the ISO/IEC 14908.1 building control standard (also known as LonWorks®) and interoperate with several other industry standards, such as BACnet® and Modbus®.
Providers of control products and systems for buildings create products using Echelon integrated circuits, transceivers and network management software. By leveraging Echelon's integration and commissioning tools with the Echelon SmartServer building controllers and LNS® network operating system, building professionals can create facility management energy monitoring and other smart building solutions that can span multiple systems, such as heating and air-conditioning, lighting systems, security/access and elevator controls.

Echelon recently added two new tools that enhance its Smart Buildings solution and enable Echelon's OEM customers and integrators to expand their addressable market:

- OpenLNS Network Operating System - a new, royalty-free network operating
system and environment for developing, deploying, and managing building
automation and energy management systems and supporting multiple
grid-aware applications.

- LonWorks/BACnet Gateway Application - an application for the Echelon
SmartServer that integrates LonWorks and BACnet systems and enables a
truly open building architecture; offered in collaboration with
ConnectEx, Inc.

"Echelon's decision to introduce OpenLNS and eliminate device credits is good for the market and gives us greater flexibility than ever before," said Magnus Kennedy, product marketing manager in the Buildings Business of Schneider Electric, an Echelon customer. "The move will expand the use of open building protocols and allow us to increase the power of our LON and BACnet solutions that deliver interoperability to our customers from top to bottom."

Echelon will be demonstrating LonWorks to BACnet/IP integration from ConnectEx, and highlighting how facilities owners can use a new demand response and energy portal service from ITC AG and Nemetschek Allplan GmbH to add grid awareness to their smart buildings.
