Eaton Announces Global Availability of Advanced Coatings to Protect Cylinder Rods in Harsh Environments

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. ... Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced the global availability of a comprehensive line of cylinder rod coatings designed to provide customized wear and corrosion resistance capabilities for Eaton cylinders. The new Application Based Coatings (ABC) include traditional hard chrome plating in a variety of thicknesses, a variety of plasma sprayed coatings and several higher end advanced coatings.

The coatings protect cylinder rods that are exposed to environmental contaminants including salt water and industrial chemicals from corrosion, and also provide abrasion resistance and other customized properties. The new coatings are offered as an option on all Eaton cylinders, but are expected to be most commonly specified on large diameter, and extra large custom-type cylinders used in civil engineering, offshore, marine, and various heavy industry applications.

"Every application is unique," said Holly Brunell, Eaton's global leader - cylinder products. "Because of this, Eaton has recognized the need to provide a variety of protection options. Our cylinders are exposed to everything from fresh and salt water immersion, to corrosive environments, spray zones, other, even more severe, conditions. The coatings included in the ABC offering are the result of extensive laboratory and field tests and analysis to ensure predictable performance that meets customer needs and expectations.

"Eaton literally has spent years evaluating rod coatings and application technologies to select those now available in the ABC line," Brunell added. "But, this is only the beginning. The Eaton Innovation Center has actively collaborated with the Cylinder Team to enhance our present offerings and aggressively develop the next generation of this critical technology."
