DVS VENICE Enhances File-Based Production at Pinewood Studios

At NAB 2012, DVS announces that the internationally renowned Pinewood Studios Group has enhanced its equipment offering with 8-channels of DVS VENICE broadcast server. This will form an essential part of Pinewood Television's upgraded TV Studio facilities. Alongside VENICE, Pinewood Television has also decided to implement additional DVS storage solution, SpycerBox Ultra. With this DVS equipment, Pinewood sets the customer framework for fast content provision.

Hanover (Germany)/Buckinghamshire (UK). The Pinewood Studios Group, a leading provider of studio and related services to the film and television industry with numerous global facilities, has opted for broadcast servers from DVS for its television studios. VENICE, as presented at this year's NAB, comes with numerous improvements, supporting various new file formats and codecs.

One of the most important features for Pinewood Television's new file-based workflow is the potential to easily run through the process of repurposing material. Thanks to VENICE and Pinewood's newly built data center, its experienced television team can react quickly to its customers' needs and their changing requirements. This state-of-the-art workflow allows for comfortable and reliable content provision.

Equipped with new interfaces, VENICE meets revolutionary standards. The VENICE systems provide 8 video channels to be utilized for recording and playback on shows recording in Pinewood's television studios, plus providing ingest and near instant editing. The DVS broadcast server manages native capturing and play-out of all common broadcast formats such as Apple ProRes 422, Panasonic DVCPRO®, AVC-Ultra, Avid DNxHD® and Sony XDCAM® HD, simultaneously scaling the different formats and creating proxy files. VENICE is especially strong when it comes to changing projects with different formats for different clients and productions. The broadcast server allows for a quick and comfortable configuration and adapts to different scenarios with ease, providing the users with the right content quickly.

Moreover, Pinewood Television's production chain was upgraded with a SpycerBox Ultra that will be implemented as a metadata and file server. The high-performance bridge between different networks will enable Pinewood to connect its real-time and non-real-time workflows with each other so it can profit from the additional protection with multiple RAID-5 systems.

Paul Darbyshire, Pinewood's Director of Television Operations commented: "We are delighted to announce our decision to commit to DVS for our television production workflow here at NAB, and are pleased to let the International Broadcast industry know how the television team at Pinewood Studios are looking forward to working with DVS technology. The new VENICE systems will allow us to respond more quickly and flexibly to our production clients needs, and will provide them with an enhanced production workflow saving considerable time - and ideally budget."

Darren Woolfson, Pinewood's Group Director of Technology commented: "The Group's further investment in DVS technology alongside the existing CLIPSTER® and SpycerBox Ultra will not only optimize our TV studio offering, but will also create huge efficiencies when delivering true file-based workflows into Post Production and Digital Content Services. Working effectively within a file-based environment can deliver a real difference to productions working at Pinewood and our experiences of working with both DVS and root6 as our technology partners in this area fills us and our customers with enormous confidence."

Oliver Gappa, Sales and Marketing Director at DVS: "The Pinewood Studios Group is an important client in the UK and has now set a standard for its worldwide facilities. We feel confident that many other broadcasters and post production companies will follow Pinewood with the decision to switch from tape- to file-based workflows. Pinewood will profit from VENICE's latest enhancements and dynamic features."

Dil Dhillon, Sales Manager of DVS' UK reseller root6 commented, "The migration from legacy video formats to emerging file-based workflows was a clincher for Pinewood. From SD to 2K native operation, VENICE was by far the most attractive option to provide a flexible, deliverable and future-proof solution."
