Original Press Release:

CertainTeed ToughGard(TM) Duct Liner with Surface Enhancement

Improved Protection Against Moisture Absorption

VALLEY FORGE, PA, SEPTEMBER 2002 -CertainTeed ToughGard(TM) Duct Liner with Enhanced Surface is a HVAC system duct liner produced with a surface coating with enhanced moisture-repellent properties that provides optimum acoustical performance.

ToughGard Duct Liner with Enhanced Surface repels moisture. But unlike reflective, continuous film coatings used on competitive duct liners, the "breathable" Enhanced Surface coating preserves the sound-dampening performance of the duct liner by allowing sound waves to pass through the open-cell structure and into the sound-absorbing glass fiber mat.

The surface will help alleviate some specifiers' concerns about moisture that may enter a duct system due to improperly sealed duct joints or poorly installed and maintained HVAC systems. The air stream surface contains an EPA registered antimicrobial agent in order to reduce the potential of microbial growth that may affect this product. The antimicrobial properties are intended to only protect this product.

This product enhancement is one of the latest refinements to CertainTeed's ToughGard family of IAQ-responsive HVAC insulation products. It gives system designers a wider choice of products to incorporate into a mixed HVAC system. ToughGard Duct Liner with Enhanced Surface can be specified for use throughout an entire HVAC system or used in conjunction with other ToughGard products.

The specially designed polymer technology and highly repellent additive package of compounds used in the Enhanced Surface coating are coupled with the industry-standard toughness of the ToughGard non-woven facing. The result is a tougher, smoother, more damage-resistant airstream surface that resists HVAC moisture problems.

High-performance ToughGard products provide exceptional resistance to tearing, puncturing, and surface wear during installation and cleaning with industry-recognized duct cleaning equipment outlined in the NAIMA Duct Cleaning Guide.

The airstream surface serves as a barrier against infiltration of dust and dirt into the insulation, improves system efficiency, exhibits low air resistance, and reduces the potential for fiber erosion.

ToughGard Duct Liner with Enhanced Surface is a flexible blanket composed of glass fibers bonded together with a thermosetting resin. The resilient liner can be easily brake-formed with sheet metal without damage and recovers virtually all of its thickness if compressed. Fabricators note that a minimum of dust is produced during the fabrication process, while edges can be cut easily with hand tools or automated fabrication equipment.

Additionally, the liner has a factory-applied edge coating known as Certa*Edge(TM) Coat that seals the edge fibers and assures coverage of the transverse edges with coating per SMACNA Installation Standards. This translates into labor and material savings for contractors who previously had to "butter" edges in their shop.

The product is used primarily as an acoustical liner to absorb unwanted crosstalk, equipment, and air rush noise over a broad spectrum of sound. It improves thermal efficiency by reducing heat loss or gain, decreasing HVAC system operation costs, energy consumption, and resulting emissions into the atmosphere. Condensation is also controlled, potentially resulting in improved IAQ by reducing unwanted moisture. The insulation will not deteriorate or provide sustenance for vermin or rodents, and will not corrode the sheet metal it insulates.
