Exar Adds Best-in-Class 15kV ESD RS-232/RS-485/RS-422 Single-Chip Serial Transceiver to Industry Proven Multiprotocol Portfolio

3.3V/5.0V, Dual Protocol, 15Mbps Device Delivers Maximum Design Flexibility

FREMONT, Calif. - Exar Corporation (Nasdaq: EXAR), a leader in multiprotocol serial transceiver solutions, added another versatile device to its single-chip RS-232/RS-485/RS-422 product family - the SP337. Featuring best-in-class 15kV ESD and operating from 3.3V to 5V, the SP337 can reduce the cost and simplify the design of dual protocol systems. It is ideal for factory automation, process controls, embedded PCs, security networks, point-of-sales equipment, and other applications requiring use of both RS-232 and RS-485 protocols.

"The addition of the SP337 further strengthens our market leading position in multiprotocol serial solutions," said Jack Roan, technical marketing manager, Interface Products. "Building on Exar's highly successful single-chip SP33x family, we have added the SP337 based on market demand for a high-speed, 15kV ESD, single chip solution that supports DB9 serial port connector requirements."

Product Features

A key differentiator of the SP337 is full support for the DB9 serial port connector. The RS-232 mode provides three drivers and five receivers to enable all eight signals required for DB9 (3TX/5RX). The RS-485 mode includes two independent high-speed RS-485/422 full duplex transmit and receive channels (2TX/2RX).

The SP337 has a high input impedance for up to 256 transceivers on the serial communication bus (1/8th unit load), enhanced failsafe protection, and is available in two RS-232 speed grades: 1Mbps (SP337EU), and slew limited 256kbps (SP337EB). Both EU and EB parts offer 15Mbps in RS-485 mode. A single pin toggles between modes, allowing easy programmability. Products are available in Commercial (0 to +70 degrees C) and Industrial (-40 to +85 degrees C) operating temperature grades. All bus pins are protected against severe ESD events up to +/-15kV (Human Body Model). The SP337 is a pin compatible upgrade to Exar's popular SP334.

Prices, Packages, Availability and Additional Information

The SP337 is available now in volume quantities in a RoHS compliant 28-pin TSSOP or 28-pin WSOIC package. Pricing varies from $5.48-$5.82 per unit for 1K pieces depending on speed, package and temperature grade.
