DTi Wire Protection Grommet Edging Now Meets European Rail Standard EN 45545-2
DTi’s new SL-FST material takes the heat from fire protection requirements in rail industry
Southborough, MA May 16, 2018 – Device Technologies, Inc. (DTi), a leader in the design and manufacture of enclosure related and environmental protection components, has announced that its Spring-Fast® SL-FST Transit and Rail Series wire protection grommet edging meets and complies with the rigorous European Standard EN 45545-2. Beginning this year, the updated standard on fire safety is mandatory for all materials in rolling stock in operation in Europe.
Further, DTi's Spring-Fast SL-FST Grommet Edging solution meets and is compliant to the related ASTM requirements for Flame, Smoke and Toxicity. Companies that serve both the North American and European rail equipment industry can now have unified design specifications for grommet edging that can save 49% on install costs, improve productivity by 9.5x and provide best in class performance. EN 45545-2 classifies all material on board in different hazard levels that have to fulfill specific “Requirement Sets.” These often include several test methods and focus on the use of materials that limit fire development and produce low levels of smoke and toxic fumes in the event of a fire.
“Existing specifications for smoke (ASTM E662), toxicity (BSS 7239), and flame propagation (E1354) have always posed a challenging material testing triumvirate,” said Nick Petri, President and CEO of DTi. “The arduous and demanding EN45545 specifications makes compliance even tougher. DTi’s main material focus has always been to meet these stringent guidelines and the acceptance of our SL-FST material shows our efforts are succeeding.”
DTi’s SL-FST grommet edging is fully encapsulated in a flexible, non-halogen, flame retardant, low smoke, low corrosive, and low toxic thermoplastic compound for added abrasion protection for use on high performance applications such as advanced railway and avionics systems. It locks on with finger pressure eliminating the need for solvents, adhesives, and volatile organic compounds that contribute to fire danger.
“Complying with EN45545 is even more important as we expand our presence in Europe with the recent opening of our new Hamburg, Germany, office,” Petri continued. “This effort now allows for unified design specifications for multinationals serving both the North American and European rail equipment industry.”
DTi will be showcasing the SL-FST grommet edging along with the rest of its full Spring-Fast product line at the 58th Railway Systems Supplier C&S Exhibition on May 21-24 in Omaha, NE.
