New Battery-Powered Driver Offers Precision Assembly Without Cords or Hoses

ROCK HILL, SC, June 18, 2003- Chicago Pneumatic has expanded its line of precision industrial assembly tools with the introduction of the SSB series of battery-powered fastener drivers. The tool's highly accurate and repeatable torque control provides high fastening integrity, consistency and assembly quality. The SSB series constitutes a cost-effective assembly strategy, especially in tight work spaces, where power sources are remote, in flexible assembly cells, where cords or
hoses may damage fragile workpieces or pose a safety risk and where rapid rework is necessary.

With one of the highest torque-to-speed ratios available in battery-powered tools, the SSB series reduces assembly time. Its "Super G" high magnetic flux motor produces 30% more power than conventional motors. The electronic trigger controller provides a "soft" start for correct engagement between bit and fastener. The fast shut-off, torque sensing clutch interfaced with a transistorized motor shut-off gives the tool high accuracy with low torque reaction. LEDs and audible signals indicate OK/not OK torque attainment for each tightening cycle. The LED also signals low battery charge.

The SSB series features an ergonomic T-shaped handle recognized for its comfort. Quiet operation, <70 dB(A), and low vibration, <2.5 m/s², enhance operator productivity. Weight is only 19 kg (4 lb).

The SSB120 delivers 5-12 Nm (44-106 in.-lbs) of preset controlled torque at 360 rpm; the SSB60 provides 1.5-6.0 Nm (13-53 in.-lbs) at 700-750 rpm. Bits are attached by means of a quick-change, 1/4-in. hex bit holder.

SSB series tools are powered by 12V nickel/cadmium (NiCd) or nickel/metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. The NiCd type has a rating of 600 fastening cycles per charge, the NiMH 800. Either is incorporated into a two-way PBS 3000 battery pack that can be oriented either toward or away from the workpiece for optimal balance and access. The battery packs are replenished by a single-receptacle electronically controlled charger.

Rated for more than 300,000 cycles between maintenance, the SSB offers high durability and reliability. It is constructed with industrial duty metal planetary gears with needle bearings.

The SSB is the fourth line in Chicago Pneumatic's program of electric assembly solutions. The battery tools join the SLE series of low-voltage, low-torque screwdrivers, the CVIC current-controlled programmable screwdrivers and the CVI transducerized, fully digital drivers for ultimate precision assembly. Customized solutions are also offered through the Chicago Pneumatic Application Center.
