New DPSS Laser Provides 20 mW of Single-Frequency Output at 561 nm
Carlsbad, CA - Melles Griot has introduced a new 20-mW diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) laser, operating at 561 nm, with twice the output of earlier models. The 85 YCA 020 is an extension of the YCA family of single-longitudinal mode (single-frequency) yellow lasers introduced in 2004.
According to Michael Atchley, Senior Product Manager for DPSS products at the Melles Griot Laser Group, this new laser is an ideal source for confocal laser scanning microscopy. "Before the introduction of the YCA series," noted Mr. Atchley, "output in the 560-nm range-which is ideally suited for Rhodamine, ROX, and Alexa Fluor dyes-was available only from inefficient krypton or mixed-gas (argon/krypton) ion lasers. YCA-series lasers provide equivalent output power and stability, superior mode quality, and the efficiency and reliability that are the hallmarks of DPSS lasers."
The 20-mW 85 YCA 020 is linearly polarized and operates in a single longitudinal mode with an M² factor of less than 1.2 and peakto-peak noise of less than 3 percent. The output beam is nearly circular with an aspect ratio of less than 1.1:1. The compact, conductioncooled laser head incorporates thermoelectric cooling and automatic power control for stable, long-term operation. Typical drift over a 24-hour period is less than 5 percent. Other YCA-series lasers are available with output powers of 5, 10, and 15 mW. The beam diameter and divergence of YCA-series lasers closely match that of comparable ion lasers, enabling them to be used as highly reliable drop-in replacements.
