Dow Corning Experts Present at Taiwan Tape Conference

At Taiwan Tape this November, Dr. Alex Kuo will speak about recent release coating market trends and new low-cost solutions. Dr. Robert Ekeland will introduce attendees to Dow Corning's proprietary Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Liquid Deposition (APPLD) technology and discuss its potential usefulness in label and tape applications.

The Taiwan Tape Conference will be held at the World Trade Center in Taipei, November 1 to 2, 2006. Dr. Kuo's release coating talk is scheduled for 0905-0955 on Wednesday, November 1. Dr. Ekeland's plasma technology presentation will take place the same day from 1010-1105.

Dr. Kuo will profile the latest additions to Dow Corning's proven, cost-reducing Syl-Off® Advantage Series solventless silicone release coating line. He will also introduce new Syl-Off® 7688 Coating, an innovative, 100% solids silicone release coating for solvent-based applications.

The new Advantage Series solventless products are designed to help label makers reduce their need for costly platinum catalyst to levels as low as 25-35 ppm. These products also provide options customers need to increase their productivity and deliver exactly the release performance the end-user requires.

New Syl-Off 7688 Coating is a breakthrough product using a "green chemistry" concept that allows the customer to capture full market potential with less solvent consumption. Dr. Kuo says, "This product has dramatically reduced solvent use through a high-solids bath coating process that makes solvent-based coating more environmentally friendly." The product offers fast cure at low temperature, making it a good choice for release coating on polyethylene-laminated kraft paper. "We have received excellent feedback from our promotion of this product in China this year that enables us to help customers in Taiwan understand how to adapt the product to their local process."

All of these products can improve processing and performance factors that contribute to cost optimization. Advantage Series coatings can help reduce platinum catalyst-related costs significantly in certain high-volume solventless coating applications. For solvent-based applications, the new 100% solids Syl-Off 7688 Coating can save up to 70% on solvent compared to a traditional 30% solids solvent-based product.

Dr. Ekeland will describe a "revolutionary" plasma deposition technology capable of depositing infinitely thin layers of super-functional coatings onto web-based substrates. APPLD combines cool, atmospheric-pressure plasma with liquid precursors. Dr. Ekeland says, "Other plasma processes destroy precursors, but with this process, all of the original properties of the liquid precursor are retained. As a result, APPLD provides the ultimate in surface functionality and performance."

The technique is appropriate for use on a wide range of substrates including fabrics, non-woven webs, films, paper, fibers and metal foil. The process, which is solvent- and water-free, is energy efficient and enables continuous production. Only a small manufacturing space is required and, unlike other plasma processes, there are no vacuum requirements.

Dow Corning Plasma Solutions is seeking customers in the pressure sensitive industry with potential applications for this technology. The group offers versatile equipment platforms, a range of powerful surface coatings and comprehensive support services.
