Auto-trol Introduces CAD2Web(TM) Technical Information Delivery System

Auto-trol Product Synergies Maximize and Streamline Reuse of Technical Publishing Data

Denver, Colorado, March 27, 2002 Auto-trol Technology today announced CAD2Web(TM), its system for delivering technical information that leverages 40 years of expertise in technical publishing and data management. The CAD2Web system, a combination of proven Auto-trol business solutions, can take technical content from both structured content authoring (XML, SGML, ASCII, etc.) and engineering drafting processes, and unite them downstream in a comprehensive technical delivery mechanism. The CAD2Web process combines powerful tools to enhance information reuse during creation, revision, and delivery of technical publications. CAD2Web delivers cost savings while assuring up-to-the-minute data accuracy for electronically delivered technical information.

Utilizing Auto-trol's ViewCaster(TM) product, the illustration process is automated by generating high-quality, production ready 2D technical illustration views from 3D engineering data. With the unique batch processing capability of ViewCaster, product illustrations can be output automatically. Product views can then be exported in a variety of formats including the highly portable, standards-based WebCGM.

The Tech Illustrator(TM) Master Component Library (MCL) is then used to store these product views, further enhancing and streamlining the process. This timesaving tool allows technical illustrators to access current engineering data available in pre-processed standard views. All revision and version information is tracked, helping to reduce errors when the final product illustration is created.

Kevin O'Kane, Auto-trol's Director of Research & Development, had this to say about CAD2Web. "These product synergies are important to users because they take advantage of automation and component reuse, the two leading ways that organizations can significantly reduce costs within any process. What makes the CAD2Web product suite unique is how the ViewCaster, MCL, and WebCGM products enable companies to create and repurpose graphic-as well as text-components. With Auto-trol's CAD2Web, organizations can realize significant cost savings when it comes to their technical illustration process."

Auto-trol's Tech Illustrator (TI) is a full-featured technical illustration tool that can be used to easily create web- ready, navigable technical images. TI allows for hotspotting, or link URI creation, in WebCGM files. These files, and their links, can be managed in CENTRA 2000 EDM, Auto-trol's secure, robust, and scalable document management system. The technical images, with their intuitive navigation qualities, can then be used downstream for everything from technical manuals to shop floor process diagrams.

The key component of an intelligent, managed technical delivery process is the underlying data management solution. CENTRA 2000 can track all the data and documents involved in creating technical publications.

Whether the components are technical illustrations or structured content, CENTRA 2000 brings it together in a manageable, coherent process that reduces error and saves time. Advanced features such as workflow and process monitoring help ensure that the right decisions can be made at the right time. CENTRA 2000 is designed for enterprise-scale deployments and can manage technical publications in excess of hundreds of thousands of pages. An on-line presentation of Auto-trol's CAD2Web process can be viewed at cad2web.biz.
