NEC Electronics America Strengthens Position as Leading Industrial Displays Provider with New LCD Modules for Mobile Applications

New Transflective Display Modules Offer Balanced Brightness and Reflectivity for Environments with High Ambient Light

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 11 // -- NEC Electronics America, Inc. today expanded its broad portfolio of mobile liquid crystal display (LCD) modules with the addition of two new amorphous-silicon, thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD modules from NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. Featuring a balance of high luminance and high reflectivity, the new transflective LCD modules are optimized for portable industrial applications such as portable global positioning terminals and multi-functional information devices that require clear and vivid color reproduction in indoor and outdoor environments with high ambient light.

Featuring NEC LCD Technologies' super-reflective natural light (SR-NLT) TFT technology, the new 3.5- and 2.7-inch display modules offer a choice of two operating modes: a transmissive mode employing a backlight system as the spectral source and a reflective mode employing ambient light as the spectral source. Both modules include a touch panel, timing controller and DC-DC converter that help manufacturers of portable information devices realize lower development costs, shorter lead times and overall miniaturization.

"Striking the right balance of brightness in the transmissive mode and reflective ratio in the reflective mode continues to be a challenge for system designers working with portable industrial applications that require high-quality color imaging in high ambient lighting environments," said Dr. Shigehiko Satoh, associate vice president and general manager, displays strategic business unit, NEC Electronics America. "Leveraging its design expertise in industrial displays, NEC LCD Technologies has developed new transflective display modules that solve these issues by providing advantages such as reduced development costs, faster time to market and smaller sizes."

The 2.7-inch display module (part number NL2432HC17-04B) realizes a reflective ratio of 35 percent via an optimized optical design based on NEC LCD Technologies' unique SR-NLT technology. In transmissive mode, the module has a brightness level of 100 candelas per square meter (cd/m2). This focus on reflection quality, even in direct sunlight, makes this LCD module ideal for portable global positioning terminals.

The optimization also enables the 3.5-inch display module (part number NL2432HC22-41B) to achieve a high luminance level of 200 cd/m2 and a high reflective ratio of 15 percent. High contrast ratios of 150:1 in transmissive mode and 15:1 in reflective mode also help provide a bright and clear display in any kind of ambient light, making this module suitable for multifunctional portable information devices.

Availability

Samples of the new 2.7-inch module are expected to begin shipping in December 2006 and the 3.5-inch display module is expected to be available during the first quarter of 2007.
