Exar Introduces an Integrated Light Emitting Diode (LED) Flash and Backlight Combination Driver Solution

This 500mA Flash and Four-Channel Backlight Device Can Lower Bill-of-Material (BOM) Costs, Reduce Board Space Requirements and Simplify Design

FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 8 / / -- Exar Corporation (NASDAQ:EXAR) announced the release of a highly-integrated LED flash and backlight combination, the SP7682. With a 500mA channel supporting high brightness LED flash, combined with four-channel backlight functionality in a space saving 3x3mm package, the SP7682 targets the most complex high resolution camera/cell phone designs today.

"The SP7682 is offered in two options: an I2C serial interface control (SP7682) for maximum programmability and industry standard BUS compliance, or a single-wire control (SP7682A) to easily achieve the correct LED current requirements," said Chris Lee, senior technical marketing manager, Power Management. "Furthermore, its high current capability supports the progressing LED technology, so customers can easily maximize the SP7682 performance for next generation applications without designing in a new device."

Key Product Features

Operating at fast 2.4MHz switching frequency, the SP7682 requires only four small capacitors further reducing the overall solution footprint to a new level. A programmable flash time out protection feature brings a very reliable error control mechanism to the complex LED flash circuit. The SP7682 uses
2-bits to set both the flash time out current level and to program the turn-off time of the flash. The SP7682 is designed with built-in 6-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) for precise current settings. Each backlight LED channel is programmed in 0.5mA resolution up to 31mA and flash LED channel is programmed in 10mA resolution up to 500mA. In addition, both versions of the devices are furnished with under voltage lockout, current limit, thermal shutdown, and over voltage protection features to ensure optimal performance.

Prices, Packages, Availability and Additional Information

Samples of the SP7682 / SP7682A are available now. The device is in a Pb-free, thermally enhanced 16-pin 3x3mm QFN package and operates over a -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C temperature range. In 1k piece quantities the SP7682 / SP7682A is $1.50. Additional information on this product can be found at www.sipex.com/productDetails.aspx?part=SP7682.
