Applications

o Dual Clutch Transmissions
o ECU

Market trends have indicated that dual clutch transmissions will increase their market share over the next several years. These types of transmissions are functionally as simple to operate as traditional automatic transmissions but are more mechanically efficient resulting in improved fuel economy.

In order to maximize their performance, dual clutch transmissions require an electronic control unit (ECU) with high performance sensors. Tyco Electronics has developed a dual PLCD (Permanent-magnetic Linear Contact-less Displacement) sensor package for measuring the clutch actuator position. These magneto-inductive sensors are very compact and work absolutely wear-free. This magneto-inductive sensor technology developed by Tyco Electronics is compact, wear-free and capable of achieving the demanding requirements of this application:

o Very high measurement performance
o High resistance against vibration
o Suitable for temperatures up to 150°C
o Oil resistant over lifetime

In this specific application there is a need to measure the position of two independent actuators physically located side-by-side. The close proximity of the sensors must not create any electrical interactions within the measurement technique. This is achieved by individually controlling the sensor elements integrated within a common housing. The output signals are digital PWM signals and enable the control unit to manage the gear shifts in an efficient and smooth manner.
