Disk Libraries offer storage capacities up to 348 TB.

Press Release Summary:

CLARiiON® DL310, DL710, DL720 and DL740 disk-based backup and recovery solutions combine CLARiiON networked storage systems with ATA disk drives and fully compatible tape library emulation. Capable of scaling to 348 TB capacity, these CLARiiON Disk Library (CDL) systems include active engine failover with write-cache consolidation, which enables aggregation of small blocks of data into larger, 1 MB chunks to hasten backup, restore, and archive to tape operations.

Original Press Release:

Next-Generation EMC CLARiiON Disk Libraries Deliver Twice the Performance and Capacity

Four New Systems Feature Improved Performance, Greater Scalability and Broadened Support for Tape Libraries HOPKINTON, Mass., Aug. 3 -- EMC Corporation today announced four new models of its award-winning EMC(R) CLARiiON(R) Disk Library (CDL), a simple-to-deploy, easy-to-use disk-based backup and recovery solution. The latest models feature new hardware and software capabilities that deliver up to twice the performance and capacity of previous models. Combining the power and reliability of industry-leading EMC CLARiiON networked storage systems with cost-efficient ATA disk drives and fully compatible tape library emulation, the new EMC CLARiiON DL310, DL710, DL720 and DL740 systems offer customers a wide range of proven solutions for their rapid backup and recovery requirements. The new systems provide greater performance than the previous generation and can scale to 348 terabytes of capacity. In addition to the new hardware configurations, the newest CLARiiON Disk Library systems include active engine failover. This tape emulation software delivers greater reliability through engine failover and improved performance through write-cache consolidation. Write-cache consolidation is unique to CLARiiON Disk Library. It enables the aggregation of small blocks of data into larger, one-megabyte chunks to deliver increased aggregate throughput speeds. The enhancement results in faster operations for backup, restores and archiving to tape. The four new EMC CLARiiON Disk Libraries are: - EMC CLARiiON DL740, which comes standard with two EMC CLARiiON CX700 networked storage systems and is configured with dual-emulation engines for increased performance and reliability. The DL740 can scale up to 348 terabytes and deliver sustained performance of up to 1,200 megabytes per second. - EMC CLARiiON DL720, which comes standard with a dual-emulation engine configuration for greater reliability. It delivers increased performance for compression and can scale to 174 terabytes. - EMC CLARiiON DL710, which replaces the DL700 model and features a more powerful emulation engine. It delivers up to a 40% improvement in performance and can scale to 174 terabytes. - EMC CLARiiON DL310, which replaces the DL300 model and delivers a 20% performance improvement. It scales from 3.8 to 37.5 terabytes "The EMC CLARiiON Disk Library has helped legitimize tape emulation and backup-to-disk as essential alternatives for organizations using traditional tape storage for preserving corporate and customer data," said Charles King, Principal Analyst for Pundit-IT, Inc. "With the announcement of these new CLARiiON Disk Library models, EMC has taken the same core simplicity of the previous systems and made it even more robust and appealing for the customer with increasingly demanding backup requirements." Introduced in April 2004, the EMC CLARiiON Disk Library has already become the market leader with hundreds of customer deployments. In May 2005, CMP Media LLC's Network Computing magazine recognized the EMC CLARiiON DL300 Disk Library with a "Well-Connected" award as the "Top Virtual Tape Product" for excellence in enterprise storage networking over other solutions because of its ease of management and overall completeness. "Customers have asked us for something simple that will help them meet their shrinking backup windows and ensure fast, reliable recovery of their information," said Tom Joyce, Vice President of EMC Storage Platforms Marketing. "CLARiiON Disk Library has had tremendous success by offering customers a simple solution that improves the speed and reliability of their backup and recovery operations. The new capabilities announced today takes disk-based backup and recovery one step further by delivering our customers twice the performance and capacity in the same simple-to-deploy and easy-to-manage solution." Improved Interoperability and Tape Emulation EMC continues to enhance CLARiiON Disk Library's tape emulation capabilities. CLARiiON Disk Library is now interoperable with StorageTek PowderHorn, Sony PetaSite and ADIC i2000 tape libraries, enabling customers to easily incorporate a CLARiiON Disk Library into their existing backup environment. These are in addition to existing support for Quantum ATL P-Series and ATL 7100, StorageTek L-Series and IBM 3590 and 3584 tape libraries. CLARiiON Disk Library also supports DLT and SuperDLT (AIT, SAIT), LTO, LTO-2, StorageTek 9840 and 9940, and IBM 3590 physical tape drives. Backup application support includes EMC Legato NetWorker, EMC Data Manager, Veritas NetBackup and BackupExec, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, CommVault Galaxy, Computer Associates ArcServe, BrightStor Enterprise Backup, HP DataProtector, Synscort Backup Express, BakBone NetVault and Atempo TimeNavigator. Availability The EMC CLARiiON DL310, DL710, DL720 and DL740 will be generally available in August 2005 directly through EMC and through its worldwide Velocity Channel and distribution network.
