Ferraz Shawmut Introduces New Fusible and Non-Fusible Enclosed Disconnect Switches

Variety of enclosure types are the most extensive in the industry

Newburyport, Mass., Nov. 30, 2006 - Ferraz Shawmut, a global leader in the field of circuit protection, today announced the availability of its new line of Enclosed Disconnect Switches, designed to meet plant maintenance operators' requirements for compact and durable individual disconnecting means. The Enclosed Disconnect Switches are offered in fusible and non-fusible versions and provide safety, high performance for many environments, operational convenience and easy installation.

"Ferraz Shawmut's Enclosed Non-Fused Disconnect Switches are often employed as motor disconnect switches to comply with NEC Article 430 for 'line of sight' applications," stated Mike Quinlan, Business Development Manager - Switch Products. "The code requires a disconnect switch to be provided within 15 feet of the sight of a motor to ensure a safe means of disconnection and lockout capability. Other applications include using the Fusible Enclosed Disconnects as means for panels with no incoming disconnection provision, and employing them to help mitigate the risk of arc flash hazards."

Up to 400 A, the Fusible Enclosed Disconnect Switches disconnect both the line and load sides of the fuses using two double breaking contacts per pole. This isolates the fuses in the "off" position by separating the fuse from applied voltage. This allows for truly safe fuse replacements, feeding the Switch from either the top or bottom side.

Multiple NEMA type rated enclosures are offered. In particular, the Type 4X non-metallic and stainless steel enclosures offer extreme durability and the ultimate protection in harsh environments - ideal for "wash down" applications. Up to 400 A, all Switches use silver tipped contacts technology for optimal performance in harsh environments, longer life and minimal maintenance.

The Switches have SCCRs up to 200kA and utilize popular Class CC, J or L fuses for superior short-circuit protection, reliability, safety and ease of use. Other features include easy screw mounting and multiple knockouts for wiring flexibility. The Switch handle accepts 3 padlocks to comply with OSHA lockout/tagout requirements.
